Joe Cool

At 21, he was a star. At 25, he was a legend.

Joe or Jake?

Not just one of the most famous quarterbacks of all time Joe Namath was a rock star when sports didn't have rock stars. The clothes, the hair, the women. He was a star on and off the field, he blazed his own path, he brought showbiz to sports and made no apologies doing so.

He was a lovable rogue, admired by men and adored by women. It was a time when he could get away with "I like my Johnnie Walker Red and my women blonde," and not be bashed by some women's group.

Looks like Jake might play that charming rogue many suggested he try.

"The late `60s and the early `70s were times of compelling social and political upheaval," wrote Tony Kornheiser in Inside Sports, "and Namath, with his anti-establishment shaggy hair, mustache, white shoes and Life-Is-a-Bacchanal philosophy, became a symbol of inevitable, triumphant change. The antihero."

His football career started in growing up in Beaver Falls, PA. Joe enrolled at Alabama to play college football for Coach Bear Bryant. The legendary Bryant would one day call his rebellious quarterback "the greatest athlete I ever coached."

Namath has the presence of a star," Jet's owner Sonny Werblin once said. Werblin saw more than Namath's passing arm. "You know how a real star lights up the room when he comes in. Joe has that quality."

Sounds a lot like comments that have been about Jake.

His endorsements kept him comfortable, with his pantyhose spots and his shaving off his mustache for $10,000 being his most famous commercials. He acted in movies and on television as well as in the theater, but was not another Olivier.

Over thirty years have past by since he guaranteed a victory in the Super Bowl, then delivered it. Still revered as one of the greatest football players of all time.

Jake has some big shoes to step into not only portraying Namath as the legendary ladies man, but the star athlete. He might have to get some pointers from one of the greatest quarterbacks playing the game today, I don't think Jake would mind asking Tom Brady for some technical pointers. He might might even find Brady reminding him of someone ... perhaps a tall Texan?

Namath outgrew his Broadway Joe image a long time ago. Today he is seeking to finish his college degree, striving to rear two kind, caring, confident daughters, struggling to be a holier, humbler person and mostly staying clear of the spotlight, which he neither needs for financial subsistence nor craves.

What Broadway Joe really yearns to be is your average Joe. But whenever he steps out in his capacity as an ambassador of the Jets or to help one charity or another, an adoring public will not let him. It has locked him in a time capsule, his image as a cocksure quarterback with crumbling knees petrified for posterity. "The reality of it, excuse me, is when you're in the public they already have a perception of you," Namath says. "And that can be a little awkward."

Zero, to answer your question in the previous thread, I think that PR often does things that they don't ask their clients about. I think they do put out stories and comments before clearing them with their clients. Overall image and strategy is discussed but every story is not. Who knows if this was vetted by Jeese. Also, I think that when this stuff backfires and doesn't come off the way they wanted, they can blame the tabloid for the story and ignore it because it's just a "rumor" and the party line is we don't respond to rumors.

Now if only it was Snakes on a plane. Then Samuel L. Jackson could have kicked in the door, glared at them whilst they were sitting in the bathroom, eyes glued to their watches, screamed 'Hey mother*******' and then slapped some sense into them.

AG, this was priceless. Thanks for the laugh! ;)

One of Joe's daughter made him a grandpa. Joe's ex wife is raising the child, so that their daughter can finish highschool. It must be hard for the daughter to be away from her child.

But let us never ever forget that the publicist is on the celebrity's payroll. To that end, it would not be in the publicist's best interest, neither financially nor for their career, to submit stories to a tabloid or wherever without getting the celebrity's okay first. That might be career suicide.

Stubborn TB said...

What makes it look like a PR plant to me is not just that it took so long for someone to pick it up (conveniently right around the time there haven't been any photo-ops for a few weeks), it's the fact that it's about sex in public.

For months people have literally been saying that Jake likes having sex in public and that they could never see Reese do anything like that and that that is a big reason why they don't believe Reeke.

And then all of the sudden the "private" couple supposedly can't keep their hands off each other on a plane and just have to go to the toilet and get some relief.

Doing something like that on a plane that's obviously vacated by other people than just their entourage (or is that it? Did one of the people who work for them "spot" and time them) sure as hell doesn't fit with the "We just want privacy" line.

The only reason for a celebrity couple to do something like that is because they want someone to notice it. Whether because they're bearding or just because they want the publicity doesn't matter.

Or do they really have that little self-restraint to wait until they've landed? What if it hits them right in front of the kids? Would they just rip off their clothes and go at it in front of them? But I guess if they put a blanket over themselves first, it would be okay...

That said, whoever believes Reeke actually did that really needs to go and have their heads checked.
If you're lucky you might run into Evelyn, because she sure needs multiple sessions if she really thinks anyone would believe bs like this.

JustJared has started moding comments and is not posting some of the more specific comments calling Jake & Reese out on this charade.

JJ is one of the sites where PR actually monitors comments.

JJ is the site that had the full set of Rome pictures before People hit the streets.

This is total proof to me that the reaction to this story is causing major problems and they are in damage control mode.

I cannot imagine why they would plant a story like this but if they did they are trying to orchestrate the fallout.

Dirty business isn't it. No one plays dirty like RW.

Gee, I wonder what could be such a big secret that some would come out swinging, all the way over to our little, peaceful, harmless blog? Hmmmm . . . *sniffs the air* could that be blood I smell? Or maybe just the reek of a month-old rotten fish story? They certainly are getting as many frequent flyer miles from the Rome trip as possible, aren't they? I'm gonna venture to guess that that's because it ain't gonna happen again any time soon! ;)

I feel for you, I really do - just take a look around the net - because this is becoming painful to witness now, embarassingly so. I'd quit now, before you embarass your clients further, and jettison their careers down the airplane john as well. :)

8:19 You are wrong. Jared has posted nothing on the mile high story but they did post the Namath story.Out of the 45 comments so far there are just as many they are bearding comments as there are Ted is an asshole comments. He may mod comments from time to time but he only does that when things get out of hand, he knows all about online fandom, he is a member of ONTD. And as far as "faal-out", you are talking about some online blogs and sites like ONTD, the mainstream rags are 100% behind them and that's what they care about the most. True it helps when Jared, Perez, Lainey and Trent, Popsugar are inline but they really could care less about the rest. Hell they even got The Chicago times on there side.
BTW: Reese sued the Star last year after they published the BS pregnancy story, so i think she was OK with this or they wouldn't have done it.

And look, a cell phone picture of them on the plane! How much you wanna bet there will be pics of them swapping spit on the plane next. This is coming out now because it was being saved for the drought due to them filming at the same time. Look for similar stuff from Napa Valley, all released while they are filming.

Talk about damning with faint praise. Yes, bearding is the new black.

"This is coming out now because it was being saved for the drought due to them filming at the same time. Look for similar stuff from Napa Valley, all released while they are filming."

I also agree. All that they have besides the staged pics in Rome and Napa are Jake's weird mood-swings, strange coincidences, odd incongruities, bizarre absences from Jake's life, unsubstantiated sexual innuendo and silence from the leading characters. The script is thin.

You have to wonder how many people here are using this all to aid Ted, the tabloids, etc. You talk about Jake being weird Ceteris. And how do we know you aren't one of those going to the tabs with Reeke stories. I have to wonder about the people here....

Also, the glee in which some seem to be taking with all of this is pretty sickening. You could make the same inconsistant claims about most actors yet Jake has become the scapegoat. Very scary.

"Tobey Maguire Jake Gyllenhaal Fight Over Makeup Artist ‘Brothers’ Set

Jake Gyllenhaal sure isn’t doing much to kill those rumors about his sexuality. There are whispers of a Jake Gyllenhaal Tobey Maguire feud brewing on the set of their latest film, Brothers. Two of Hollywood’s hottest men are fighting over who gets exclusive rights over the set’s lone makeup artist.

“They each want their own retoucher, but the producers don’t think it’s necessary and don’t see why they can’t share,” an on-set source tells Star Magazine.

“Tobey is holding out for his own person, while Jake said he needs his artist so badly he’ll let her stay with him during the shoot.”"

If this blog is a Jake friendly blog, then I know I have lost my mind, because I could swear the blog owner and the majority of the posters here are waiting and praying for some cataclysmic event to end Jake's career, his life with Reese, his everything, so he can come out and be what you want him to be.

Beware of wishing bad for luck for Jake and Reese or anyone…karma is a bitch and can come back and bite you on the butt. You risk inviting bad vibes by wishing bad on him...who has done nothing to you personally and would probably treat all of you with decency and respect.

I've observed that the OP/owner, usually attempts to start the blog day here with a classy post--similar to WDW-- of either news about Jake, or Austin, or both of them , but by the 4th or 5th post, sometimes earlier, the Jake/Reese bashing starts., and the oh poor Austin posts start, and continues off and on, until new post time is announced.
I agree with some posters. Reese isn't Jake, who behaves in a most benign fashion, to rumors and tab stories. She has sued a tab and won, and will again to protect her good name and her children.. So let's hope those magazines have their facts together and are ready to present them, if and when she does decide to sue...however long she takes takes her to makeup her mind.

I think most people who post here have a great amount of residual affection for Jake despite the events of the last month and only want the best for him in the long run. In fact, I would imagine that most people are concerned how the rather strange decisions he seems to be currently making will effect his long term career and personal life. More concerned than they know they should be about someone they don't know.

It just happens that its also a good laugh to make fun of Reeke, and come on, some of it is funny.

There are good cataclysmic events and bad cataclysmic events. Jake coming out would be a good event; Jake ending this fauxmance (but not the friendship because he needs friends) would be a good event; Jake's career ending would be a bad event; Jake's career soaring after coming out and winning an oscar for his phenomenal acting talent would be a good event.

“Tobey is holding out for his own person, while Jake said he needs his artist so badly he’ll let her stay with him during the shoot.”"

Fabulous. Now that's the Jake I know and love. A tough guy who wants his *own* retoucher, just like Joe Namath and David Beckham, right? What's that Elton John song again? ;)

Veering back on the road.

The dynamics of a set would be fascinating to watch and observe. Because it is a microcosm - everyone jockeying for their own position in the existence.

Who eats or hangs with the crew, and who hangs with who, who stays in their trailer, who plays favorites, who plays one against the other, the temperaments of the leads, the quirkiness in which some of them work. Some who want lots of rehearsal, some who want lots of takes, those who think the script is the gospel and others who take is as mere suggestion. Then you have the crew who is making all of this happen. Hundreds of people hundreds of personality and a hierarchical structure.

Maybe it's true you need a degree in anthropology/behavioral science more than film school to direct.

Pinky why did you post this comment? Do you agree with ot, disagree? I find it totally stupid. Why couldn't Jake play a quarterback? He does not have the physique? He can sure bulk up to it, as he did for Jarhead if that's the requirement. He is tall and sporty looking so I don't see a problem there. He can sure act and I think he could play a mean Joe Namath or any pother personality. Oh wait a minute he cannot play football maybe? Well that's why he is an actor in amovie not a quarterback in real life. Duh.

I feel so distanced from this whole Jeese circus; more and more each day. I'm now at a point where I can only sit back and watch the latest garish tent get pegged in. What could possibly be next considering they feel the need to get more outlandish and OOT. I really don't want Reese's kids to be dragged into this as props and I fear that's where it's going.

I really am looking forward to Brothers, I'm kind of ambivalent about the other projects at the moment. I know there's a really dark, deep choppy Jake reserved for Brothers and I can't wait to see it.

Although you may doubt their sanity sometimes, I don't think either Jake or Reese would drag her kids into this (give them some benefit of the doubt on that at least, neither would stoop that low).

And now that our man Toothy has started getting his public-sex groove on with a stronger-chinned partner, I haven't heard much about Austin at all..."

Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon were "spotted" going into the same bathroom together during a long flight from Frankfurt to Los Angeles reports Star Magazine. Someone thinks they were doing it. I can hear Jakey G giggling to that sentence right now. "Doing it with a girl? Ewwww..."

Anyway, this source said, “Reese and Jake kissed and cuddled together under a blanket in her recliner seat in the back row." Reese apparently then got up and went to the toilet and Jake followed her shortly thereafter going into the same toilet. Scandal.

“I started timing them - they were together in there for 11-minutes." Jake came out first and then Reese came out. I'm sure nobody "came" inside that bathroom.

Oh please! People need to stop with these falsities. Her tampon probably got stuck in her coochie and she needed her best girlfriend to help fish it out. I refuse to believe they are a couple!

I'm with you about that Lance lifestory too London, although as another poster pointed out (and I can't remember who, really sorry!!) Jake once said he would not commit if there wasn't any script and there still aren't any for that Namath bio. So right now I'm really hoping this project will materialize.

I think it really could be a great role. Imagine: playing an accomplished athlete, a drunk, a womanizer, a flamboyant performer, an eccentric, etc. Yum!

I think Brothers' target audience will be more female, although since this is HW they might want to put more emphasis on war scenes. But I give a vote of confidence to Sheridan though. I'm still undecided about watching or not watching the original but I probably won't be able to resist. :)

Despite all the gossip, Jake does NOT have sex in public. He's very private about it and actually kind of shy.

Anonymous said...

My biggest thing with the Jeese is that they are obviously 'selling'the relationship for one or more reason.

Whether it is real or bearding is virtually irrelevant now.

Hiding a same sex relationship, trying to stop rumours of a same sex relationship, making her look desirable, making him look more like an A lister, promoting both their images etc.

There is nothing wrong with these reasons above for 'what' they are doing. It's all part of the HW game. It's 'how' they are doing it that is ridiculous and kind of offensive.

Any couple in HW who pimp their lives out to the media are always going to be subjected to ridicule all over the net.

Whatever side you stand on, no one can say they aren't doing their share of pimping this relationship out.

As soon as we 'heard' about Brangelina going to a sex store in London, I knew we'd get a sex story about Jeese next - and what do you know? Here it is.

But just like no one can convince you some actress is beautiful just because enough media outlets say so, nor can any media outlet convince me that these two together are 'hot', 'sexy', 'romantic' or 'intriguing'.

And you know what? If these two kids are crazy about each other, why exactly are they going to so much trouble to convince the rest of us they feel that way? It should radiate from within them and they should still be at the stage where they want to keep their innermost stuff to themselves.
Forget the kids, the images, the exes. Two people this mad in love should feel disrespected that this kind of stuff is out there in one of their fave magazines.

Reese's fans should never even try to put the word 'classy' in the same sentence as her ever again.
