The Out Spotlight

This is a new feature here at OMG that will focus on an out queer artist. This spotlight will focus on poet Mary Oliver. Oliver won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 for her collection, American Primitive. She lived with Molly Malone Cook, her literary agent, for over 40 years until Malone's death in 2005. Most of Oliver's poems focus on the natural world, and she has been compared to both Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau. Here is a poem called "After Her Death" that Oliver wrote about the death of Molly Malone Cook-

After Her Death

I am trying to find the lesson

for tomorrow. Matthew something.

Which lectionary? I have not

forgotten the Way, but, a little,

the way to the Way. The trees keep whispering

peace, peace, and the birds

in the shallows are full of the

bodies of small fish and are

content. They open their wings

so easily, and fly. So. It is still

possible.

I open the book

which the strange, difficult, beautiful church

has given me. To Matthew. Anywhere.

From Thirst, Poems by Mary Oliver (2006)

Happy Sunday, all -

What a fantastic idea for a regular feature! I am not familiar with Mary Oliver, and I will become so, because of her association to the natural world, and the comparisons to Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau, two writers whose philosophies have always inspired me. Great music too! :)

Great post. I cannot believe that the Walt Whitman Museum is within 20 minutes from where I live and I have never been there. I will make it a point of going soon and then telling everyone here about it.

ths is a great feature! we need some celebration :)

i am not familiar with Mary Oliver either... i am a fan of another "Mary" though - Mary Renault, who is also a pioneering writer and had a life long relationship with her female partner. Her book "The Charioteer" is one of my all time favvourite books.

Boy, I wish we'd known about this yesterday! Brothers was holding an open casting call for extras in Albuquerque!

Anonymous said...

Winterbird,

My Mary Renault favorite is "The Persian Boy."

Wonderful debut to an inspiring new OMG feature, Wicked. Thanks!

Off to watch FNL! Woot!

Oh not to worry, wicked. It was posted at all the requisite fawning Jake and Jake/Reese blogs and boards. :-)

Nice poem.

BTW, the extra call was in Santa Fe, not Albuquerque. And from the past thread ... it is Casanova, not Cassanova.

Great feature Wicked, and it's nice to read about someone I know nothing about.

I guess OMGers don't go to those sites. I thought as much.

From previous thread, np said
'Actually it is not a having an opinion, it is more like bitching and loving to play character assassination, just like you seem to like doing yourself.'

If you go around the net, np, you will actually see that Jake and to a lesser degree, Reese, are practically nurtured on the net compared to about 80% other actors/actresses.

I was referring to people saying either that Reese is a beard, they are both liars and the relationship is fake OR they are in a real relationship but don't respect each other enough to not also use it to further their images/careers.

Whether you like it or not, one of these choices above is true to some degree.

What's the betting np stood for new poster, ag?

This is my first post anywhere with brand-new 'puter so wanted to make it on my favourite site.

I have never heard of Mary Oliver either, but thank you Wicked for bringing her to our attention. I've loved Whitman and Thoreau since I studied them as a young gal. I have travelled much in Concord ... (um, not sure that was quite right)! Mary Renault was another favourite - The Charioteer would make a great film (I'm seeing James McAvoy in one of the roles ... ). My top MR though is Fire from Heaven.

Anonymous said...

no scylla, np does not stand for new poster, you got it all wrong as the rest of your comment about me.
And ng, I don't really care about percentages compared to other actors. Are you saying that because other people are being bashed even more, it is ok to say whatever?
I was actually referring to you, and anyone who has been reading your posts over a period of time would know what I mean.

This is a really touching poem. This line
forgotten the Way, but, a little, the way to the Way
just a little sentence that speaks so honestly of the author's spirituality in a time of grief. So many who have lost someone (a partner, a parent, a friend) can completely understand

Thanks for sharing Wicked. I think celebrating those who lived or are living their lives out and proud is great. May their lives can be examples to those who are still working to find their way to coming out.

What a terrific idea! And to start with a poet, nonetheless! It's been a long time since I read poetry. The ones I keep going back to are Blake and Boris Vian but I would not call myself a connoisseur. :)

I don't know Mary Oliver, so this will be another discovery for me. As for Mary Renault, which is mentioned by Winterbird and Me, I've often seen her books but never read them as historical novels are not my favorite genre. Guess it's never late to try. ;)

BTW, I loved Austin the other night. I don't know if all his acting chops will be on display with this role but after John Monad and House of Usher it was nice to see him "au naturel", so to speak.

Anonymous said...

Special K and Wicked, thank you for starting this blog. I might be in a minority here but I am glad WFT is closing down. I really think Danielle Dillon should seek mental help.
Sorry Tom for what she appear to have just told you, but I am glad you stood up and had the courage to say it for what it is. Thank you too.

Anonymous said...

Like the poem, but on a slightly more shallow note:

If anyone gets to hear of any YouTube extracts of Austin in FNL can they post them here. I'm in Europe and we can't watch it as nbc (quite naturally) don't seem to allow you to view their videos outside the US.

Also, does anyone know when Informers will be released. Now I know he's playing Martin I've re-read (well skimmed through) the book and think he'll be great in that role.

Thanks

Thanks for the encouragement Standup. I somehow got the nerve to stand up to Dany when I found an extra set of b*lls this morning. Maybe they belong to someone we know and love. I will save them for him until he decides to come home. Until then he can follow his momma around. Sorry Mrs. G. That was not meant for you.

Anonymous said...

Tom, who are you talking about if not Jake re: following his mamma? But I do applaud you giving it to Dany.

Anonymous said...

I stopped posting at WFT a long time ago...I had no idea what was going on with Dany, I would just read the posts and comments, but I was not going to dare post my opinion about what was happening there because I'm pretty sure Dany hates me haha

It's all good though, maybe I'll comment here though...:)

It's really sad that we have been reduced to this. No one wants to face reality...and now it's Fuck Dany Day. It is not my fault (nor Ted's) for what Jake has done. Tom, you come on the blog and call me a troll, and you think I am supposed to allow that? I have never spoken ill of you, and I can't believe you would about me just because Jake Gyllenhaal actions have not turned out the way you (we all) hoped it would. This is the reality of the situation. Jake has made his decision

Canadian-TB, I don't hate you, for what it's worth.

Thank you. :)

Anonymous said...

Sorry but it has been Fuck Dany Day for a longtime actually, it is just that you have been busy hitting the delete button, Dany, though now it is rather pointless. It is also not Jake's fault not ours for what you have done.

All,
OMG is NOT a place to insult other people or blogs. We want to have a positive community here. Insults against anyone are not welcome. I've said this before and I'll say it again- leave other blogs alone. It will only bring trouble here and it's rude. I apologize to both Dany and WFT on behalf of OMG.

Anonymous said...

Dany sorry but I think you are the one not facing reality.

we have been reduced to this?

We, who? I don't think so. I take no responsibility for what your site looks like this days. I left longtime ago when I had a very clear feeling honest opinions were not welcome, and I got tired of your bitterness and, hmmm, let's just say 'lack of class'. Dear, you got what you deserve.

Anonymous said...

OMG wouldn't exist without Dany and I don't believe 7:23 is interested in Jake and Austin.

Thank you for the good times at WFT, Dany. Jake is of course responsible for his own actions.

Anonymous said...

I would also hope that OMG is NOT a place for other blog owners to come and start bickering with OMG readers about posts and discussions occurring elsewhere. Just my humble and wishful opinion, fully understanding that this is not my blog.

- said...

Wicked, I apologize for coming here and unleashing people's true feelings about me, but I was responding to comments posted here about me. People can think what they wish of me, it's a free world of thought. :)

Anonymous said...

They open their wings so easily, and fly.

Ah! Such a nice thought.
Thanks Wicked. This is a great feature.

Soooooo back on topic.

Great poem. Again, never heard of her, but she sounds wonderful. Too bad so many great poets are unknown.

Whut's up with Jake these days?

Where you at, Austin?

"OMG wouldn't exist without Dany and I don't believe 7:23 is interested in Jake and Austin."

I completely agree.

And where art thou, Austi Spumanti?

Anonymous said...

Maybe Austi Spumanti is spending time with his Hineykins.

Anonymous said...

sorry orchid and london-tb I am VERY interested in Austin and Jake, very. Not sure how that has anything to do with liking Dany or the way she has handled her blog. But I agree with you both, OMG would not exists without her.

Mary Oliver is very popular with the ministers at my church. They often use her poems as readings before their sermons. That's how I first heard of her.
A woman at my church loves Mary Oliver so much that she was going to go to Provincetown (where Oliver lives) and try to find her. I never thought poets had groupies!

Anonymous said...

^^Wow, Wicked, I didn't realize that. I also want to read Mary Renault. And let's not get into a pissing blog battle guys. I will always love and appreciate Dany and WFT. Don't let anyone drive a wedge through us again. :)

WFT was an easy target for the Jake is straight crowd and Jake's hired PR troll. If that site is slowing down, changing or closing, they will natually gravitate here + probably have already. We need to remain strong and focused so they don't damage this site.

Funny, I don't remember you under our bed when we were boffing the days and nights away in our luxurious suite in Napa. It's over buddy. But don't worry. I'm sure Jake will invite you to our wedding next year. Please keep the date open when we announce it. Sorry you can't be best man though but we're leaving that for Jake's real best friend--the one who cooks.

Yeah, no fighting among blogs, everyone. It's just not worth it. Whatever will be, will be with Jake; we have no control over that. What we do have control over is the positivity of our community, something to enjoy and build on.

I think the Out Spotlight is a great idea, I'm looking forward to seeing more! And I love this poem from Mary Oliver, I love the simple, conversational way about it; just a truthful, inner dialogue that isn't heavy but still has a lot of meaning and weight. I like the rhythm of it, too.

I read just about everything Mary Renault wrote a few years ago as well as an excellent biography that was written about her. I particularly loved her Alexander series (and analysis); The Persian Boy is still my favourite. Winterbird, I also read the Charioteer. I found it quite dry and a little difficult to get through at times, but it ends up being quite a moving story that pulls no punches. It reminded me of Maurice in places. Renault was a very passionate writer who really loved her characters.

Anonymous said...

I like the idea of the Out Spotlight, too. But the first series was on Mary Oliver, why is everyone talking about Mary Renault? I know they're two different poets, but it's confusing when people keep bringing up the two different Marys, ya know?!

I hate to say this but I think we may be about to witness the completion of the Reeke triptych. Something tells me these two have one last exotic location horror lined up for their new adoring fans delectation.

I think people should have their sick buckets ready on Thursday.

In Hawaii I imagine.

Anonymous said...

It's kind of nice of Jake and Reese to release their schedule of photo ops ahead of time so we can prepare ourselves, don't you think?

Bet Jake and Austin could never do that, as spontaneous and passionate as they are. They'd have made out in the car already by the time they reached that public place.

Anonymous said...

Rome, San Francisco, Hawaii. It really looks like Jake doesn't want to show the farce in his own backyard. I'm thinking Namibia for the next outing.

It's so sad. Last year this time we had two sets of Jaustin photos and if I remember correctly a Jar dinner. I'm almost starting to wish Jake breaks down and has to come out.

There are enough holes in this sham to sail the QE II through. The timing is suspect, what couple who valued privacy would invite the media in to film basically their every move? If someone would mislead about themselves to promote a movie once, who's to say they wouldn't again? I don't know, I suspect very soon something is going to give, and it's all going to blow up.
