Out Spotlight XXIV

Today we'll focus on out WNBA athlete Sheryl Swoopes. Swoopes played 11 years for the WNBA's Houston Comets, who won 4 WNBA championships with her at forward. Two months ago, Swoopes signed to play with the Seattle Storm. Swoopes has won 3 Olympic gold medals and was a 3-time WNBA MVP. Swoopes' college team, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders, won the NCAA championship in 1993, when she was a senior.

Swoopes was the first player signed into the WNBA when it was created. She played the last third of that first season after giving birth to her son, Jordan, and lead her team to the first WNBA championship. Swoopes is known for great offense and defense, and has been called the female Michael Jordan. Swoopes was the first women's basketball player to have a Nike shoe named after her- the "Air Swoopes."

Swoopes married in 1995 and had her son. The couple divorced in 1999, with joint child custody. In 2005, Swoopes came out publicly as a lesbian. Her partner is former basketball player and Houston Comets assistant coach, Alisa Scott. Swoopes and Scott are raising Swoopes' son together.

Swoopes told ESPN-

"It doesn't change who I am. I can't help who I fall in love with. No one can. .. Discovering I'm gay just sort of happened much later in life. Being intimate with [Alisa] or any other woman never entered my mind. At the same time, I'm a firm believer that when you fall in love with somebody, you can't control that."

"But I'm tired of being miserable. Not being free to be who I am, not being OK with other people knowing who I am -- it has been miserable. And it hurts. I'm a very affectionate person. Going out to the movies or dinner, seeing so-called normal couples show affection in public and knowing that I can't, that hurts. It's frustrating to keep everything inside and not be who I want to be. I'm sure life is not going to be easier for me just because I'm coming out. But at least I'll be free."

The ESPN story

What's interesting is that the WNBA has a reputation for having many lesbian fans and players. I had season tickets to the Washington Mystics for several years and I can attest to the game's popularity among lesbians. Also, many of us would talk at the games about who was or was not gay in the league. Swoopes was one of the names that was often mentioned as a probable lesbian.

The WNBA has had difficulty in dealing with its gay players and fans. Active players have been discouraged from coming out. There was a controversy in Washington a few years ago over a feature at games that involved showing kissing couples on the Jumbotron. They would never show two women, despite the fact that there were numerous lesbian couples kissing in the stands trying to get pictured. They never did show lesbian couple that I know of and they ended the feature after the complaints from the gay community. I say kudos to Swoopes for having the guts to come out while still playing.

Remember I asked yesterday how long before the romantic dinner sighting? Well, does lunch count? If so, the answer is- not long.

Doesn't matter how many times she visits the set or how many dinners they have, the status quo remains the same - one nasty bearding game between two actors struggling to keep their names in the news.

Good morning all,

Hooray for Sheryl Swoopes and Alisa (and Beethoven!). Very heartfelt and eloquent, her description of what it felt like not to be able to be herself.

Oh, I just read about the tragedy at the Kentucky Derby, what a terrible shame. I didn't realize it was yesterday, and I'm glad I didn't watch and hear about it. I would have been terribly upset. You are right Wicked, something is definitely wrong in horse racing, because this is the second time (at least) in as many years that something has happened to a horse's legs. Last year a horse had to be put down too, I believe. It's always a questionable thing, animals used for human entertainment. Horses are born to run, and it is so beautiful to see them, but if they are not being bred/raised or treated humanely, it needs to be looked into. :(

Jake and Reese having lunch at the Hominy Grill? Funny how the blogger couldn't get the picture to load, if I read correctly. The desserts look good, tho. ;)

Anonymous said...

No, she didn't want to be obnoxious:

"But the walk was worth it because REESE WITHERSPOON and Jake Gyllenhaal were dining at Hominy Grill!!! Reese is my favorite actress, so I was more than starstruck. As much as I wanted to snap a photo for you guys, I resisted being obnoxious, but I did go to the bathroom mid-meal just to look at them again"

Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post wrote an excellent article about the breakdown of Eight Belles, with an eloquent argument for why NBC should have kept the camera on her after her breakdown-

The camera cut away from her, but it should have stayed on her. Eight Belles had run herself half to death yesterday, and now the vets were finishing the job as she lay on her side, her beautiful figure a black hump on the track. Horses don't just fall down like that, you thought as NBC flitted away, cowardlike, from the sickening picture to the more appealing image of the Kentucky Derby victor, Big Brown.

It's unfortunate that NBC chose to shy away from the breakdown of Eight Belles, because we need a hard look at the real cost to the horses, no matter how upsetting and painful it is to see.

Sometimes we need to look at things that we don't want to see.

article

I think this lunch sighting is credible and ITA with Tom. They couldn't pass it up.

Like your attitude, Tom, if I may say so.

I just wanted to wish Joker a Happy Birthday. Birthdays are indeed very special and I hope you get to have a great time with family/friends.

Was @ Borders last night and they have JFC half price. I think I'm going to go up there this morning and buy it, sight unseen. Please someone tell me it'll be worth it! I just want to get some looks in on Austin, I don't even know how the show was. Don't have HBO.

Happy Birthday Joker.

Great story on Sheryl today. The whole "lesbian issue" and the WBNA is disgraceful. They know it is a large part of their fan base, but they're afraid of scaring off other fans.

I think the sighting of Reeke is credible, and we knew we'd get it. I don't think I would take a picture of Jake in a restaurant either if I saw him.

Since I was not around much yesterday I just wanted to say more about unnecessary lies. Since we only had the two choices, I voted no. But I do think a lot of what has gone on with Reeke since Rome is unnecessary. The people who barely know who Jake is do not need this big show, the JIS/babbler crowd doesn't need all of this to convince them, and the Jake is gay crowd is never going to be convinced no matter what he does. I do think after the Ted bit last October they needed to to do more to show the PTB that he was serious about playing their game, but don't see why we need to the weekly appointments, magazine covers, selling time shares, tour of NYC, etc.

Anonymous said...

Happy Birthday Joker! Hope you have a wonderful day!

I know, it was very difficult having only two choices in yesterday's poll. I went with my gut feeling, but that is not to say I couldn't understand why someone would feel a lie was necessary. And there are times when lying or not being entirely truthful would be necessary, albeit rare, if it would save a person's or people's lives.

I don't know about these sightings anymore, one is the same as any other now, since I'll never know whether they are true or not, just on the word of another. It is a pretty yummy looking blog with all the food commentary, tho! I'd never take a picture of Jake or any famous person ever without their knowledge or permission.

You forget the Reese factor. Jake might have been able to get away with the minimal for Jeesing, but Reese needed exposure even more. Has to get the revenge of the ex. Reese is the bigger star and she is driving the Jeese Wagon. Did you ever notice that it always Reese and Jake? Not Jake and Reese. That tells you a lot.

frenchy said...

A very, very happy birthday (((Joker))). Great to know you're still around! :)

Thanks for this spotlight. A beautiful ray of sun in an otherwise grey and rainy day over here. :) The following part: I'm a very affectionate person. Going out to the movies or dinner, seeing so-called normal couples show affection in public and knowing that I can't, that hurts jumped out. Wonder why... ;)

I have to chime in regarding who should play Dusty. If we're looking for tall blond with flair & panache I vote for fabulous Charlize Theron. She got the acting chops, the warmth, the guts, the intelligence, the soul and pretty much everything you could wish from a great actress IMO. And she proved a convincing chameleon in terms of look.

Regarding the lies, necessary or not, I'll just say that what appears totally unnecessary to me -"I dated Sophia Bush" -(Austin); "straigts play gay better" (Jake in Telegraph) - ok, ok, I know I'm rephrasing but this was what they ultimately meant, right? - may have seemed necessary to them. Although it seems that all those lies that sprout from this perceived "necessity" often lead to totally unnecessary shit in the end (meaning BS with no productive results to account for in the end). Reeke of course being the ultimate farce IMO and still one that has to show any convincing positive outcome on the professional level.

A couple of suggestions for our next movie discussion:

Shortbus sounds good - talking about fear of involvement, fidelity and how hard it is for women to take off... ;D

I've heard plenty of good comments about Shelter but I thought it was still playing in theaters. Or have they decided to go the modern way and launch it simultaneously on the big screen and on DVD?

A couple of more suggestions: My Beautiful Laundrette
Ed Wood
Law of Desire and perhaps
V for Vendetta? Ha! Ha! Ha! Kidding! Well actually no, I'm serious - not the best movie of the decade but lots of interesting concepts and ideas thrown in that could make for an interesting exchange of views... And I have to admit knowing Hugo Weaving is the one hiding behind that mask is quite appealing to me. ;)

destiny said...

Austin is really good in JFC. I loved JFC, but I will say it is not everyone's cup of tea. There are a lot of things that didn't make sense to me without reading comments at the HBO boards, especially the religious/philosphical touches. And then there are the things no on got, the unanswered questions, etc.

I will also say that if you get it the first episode has a lot of problems, partly because I think some of the acting, particularly Rebecca D. is not very good, and I think Milch still hadn't entirely worked out where he wanted to go with the show. But it has some great moments in it too, particular from Austin, so stick with it.

Anonymous said...

^^Yes, you notice her name is in all caps on that blog, the blog equivalent of neon lights. Jake's name is in initial caps, as expected for a supporting actor. Although I must give credit for her participation in the Avon walk today,it's an important cause. :)

Well, since we only had two choices, I voted yes, with Reeke Inc. in mind. :D

ITA with you Destiny about the Reeke lies-in-overdrive being totally unncessary for Jake. But they were probably considered vital for Reese.

destiny said...

You're probably right about some of the Reeke stuff Special. I'm sure that Reeke put a lot of conditions on this.

And you're right too Frenchy. I totally forgot about the straight playing gay comment, which is TOTALLY unnecessary, homophobic, etc. (Sorry for shouting, but that one really rankles me). And was it Austin who said he'd dated Sophia, or was it just mentioned in the article like is the case in so many such stories? The latter, which I think of as bearding light, doesn't bother me the way other things do, and I would put in the category of necessary. But if Austin actually said it, I think going that step is unnecessaryl

Although I must give credit for her participation in the Avon walk today,it's an important cause. :)

uh, part of the avon contract. she had no choice. lets see if she smiles like she means it [hint to reese; think of $$$$]

Good article on Swoopes today. It was particualrly sad to read that a coach would not hire women who she knew were gay on the team. It's depressing that that kind of homophobia still exists.

I agree Special. I tihnk the Reese/Jake pairing was really all about Reese and protecting her image. Although I do think they are good friends I think Jakes validation in the gereral publics mind will ultimately have to come from his on-screen performances - not his off-screen associations.

"straights play gay better" (Jake in Telegraph)"

Jake actually said that??? Does anyone have a link to that article?

Clarity said...

Oh - I forgot to say Happy Birthday Joker.

Yesterday I came accross a movie called The Sum of Us with Russell Crowe. I haven't seen it but it looks really good. Maybe if anyone has seen it they can give an opinion on whether it would be a good choice for the movie club.

Anonymous said...

My Beautiful Laundrette would be a great choice for the movie club.

I thought Austin actually said he had dated Sophia, but perhaps it was the writer of the piece.....

""straigts play gay better" (Jake in Telegraph) - ok, ok, I know I'm rephrasing but this was what they ultimately meant, right?" - Frenchy was paraphrasing what Jake said, he didn't use those exact words.

Happy birthday Joker!

Great Movie Club suggestions, guys. I saw The Sum of Us when it came out and it's a really cute movie. Very sweet.

It is unbelievable the way the WNBA handles its lesbian fanbase and players. Lesbians have supported this league since its inception. The league would not exist without our support.

Anonymous said...

Perez has a Reeke sighting shopping (what else do they do?) at Banana Republic in Charleston. Wondered when a sighting would get picked up by a major gossip. Didn't take long.

frenchy said...

It is unbelievable the way the WNBA handles its lesbian fanbase and players. Lesbians have supported this league since its inception. The league would not exist without our support.

I read that they're terrified of being pigeonholed as a lesbian league, even if many players are straight. Another case of discarding the very people who helped you laid the foundations of your own house. And again that feeling of déjà vu...

Clarity I can't believe you're mentioning The Sum of Us. I've had that DVD for months and just decided to watch it yesterdsay!

I agree with Wicked, very sweet and heartwarming... and a very young (and very good & cute) Russell Crowe.

One word of warning though: the characters regularly speak directly to the camera (to the viewers) and you might find that technique a bit off-putting. But the story has beautiful and very touching moments and the actors are uniformly good.

frenchy said...

Max, in all fairness I think it's important for me to post the Telegraph excerpt I was referring to in my previous comment.

So let's get it on the record: is he saying he is open to persuasion? 'No, I am not open to persuasion myself, but the idea of homosexuality is acceptable to me. I grew up in a city where half the people I know are gay. Both of my godfathers are gay.'

(...)

OK, having established that he is not bisexual, was he being quite calculating when he allowed people to think he was? 'It was meant as a way of saying it was important for Heath [Ledger, his co-star in Brokeback Mountain] and I to have the movie exist as the movie, but also to have people know it was two straight actors playing those parts.'

I think I follow. The chemistry and tension wouldn't have worked as well if two gay actors had been playing those roles, and because they were both straight it made their sexual awkwardness more convincing, more like it might be for two cowboys. 'Exactly. Here are these two lonely people who find themselves through love. Love has no bounds and these two people found a connection in this massive, lonely landscape of Wyoming.'

Franchy, you might want to also include Austin's quote about Sophia Bush because he did say he dated her in an interview. Personally I don't think Jake's comment was homophobic. I actually understand what he is trying to say regarding BBM. It may not have been worded in the best way but no it wasn't homophobic to me. Frankly there are so many bloggers who make the most insulting and homophobic comments about Jake (hissy fit being a perfect example) and no one says a word. I find that disgusting.

Florida Tom said...

There is one thing I would like to say about Jake's performance in BBM. Jake did not look awkward in any of his love scenes. I thought Heath did but Jake certainly was not. The second love scene in the tent showed me that Jake had been that route before. No one can look at that scene and say Jake looked awkward. He looked totally turned on and very much in love.

Anonymous said...

Tom, you say that you won't ever believe sightings, etc. but you seem to believe that Ted knows all about Jake? Seems Ted has every reason to twist things and make up stories that you want to hear as much as you claim PR or random bloggers do. Why did he all of a sudden write that he belonged to a gym with Jake? How come he didn't mention that ages ago?

I love Jake and Austin but I don't know them or what their friendships/relationships are. I can't claim to know what is real or fake with Jake/Reese or with Jake/Austin. I just take it all with a grain of salt. I do agree with Special that most of the Reese/Jake tabloid stuff and attention is for Reese.

Tom, Jake was acting in BBM. And I think he did a very good job. He had to be the one who showed his love to Ennis. Ennis had to be more afraid. Jake was in character and gets underrated as the "easier" role to play. I don't agree at all. Would you say an actor who does a good job as a murderer has experience in real life? Even if Jake is gay it shouldn't make a difference in how he acted in BBM.

Thank you Frenchy for providing the link. I'm just glad he didn't say those exact words. I think he was kind of being led in the interview but I also know he can be vague sometimes too.

Huh??? Of course he can't be persuaded to be gay so I don’t really understand that statement. I thought it was interesting though that he thinks he lives in a "different world". I wonder how he views his world.

I'm glad I had the right feeling about The Sum of Us. I'm going to put it on my netflix list.

Have to comment on the issue of Ted never mentioning that he and Jake went to the same gym and worked out on nearby machines. Back in the old days, when Jake was close to coming out, there was discussion on WFT that Ted may be getting his info first hand from Jake himself. That Jake was using Ted (mutually) to prepare the way for the big reveal. Ted kept this gym knowledge to himself all this time, which to me adds some credibility to this theory. That he reveals it now tells me he has given up on Toothy ever coming out. Voluntarily that is.

Thanks for the link Said. When I saw that post I remembered it and the feeling I got was the exact one I expressed that day when that article was posted at OMG. Here's what I said that day, at 9:36 PM.

About the fits: James Caan & Russell are the culprits IMO. Don't worry, if one day I think Jake is behaving like a prima donna I won't hesitate to say so but in this case I think Russell was caught with his pants down by that veteran actor's walking out.

This Fits shit was brought here that day when Caan walked out the set. I agree that I should have stressed the fact that the tone of that blogger was terribly homophobic. On the other hand, I'd never heard of the guy and I'm always extremely reluctant to give those obscure bloggers any publicity, particularly when they try do get attention with shitty provocative stuff like that.

It's a nice little movie. I think you're going to enjoy it. But even if you don't please tell us what you thought about it. :)

One thing I liked about that movie is hearing Australian English; "ticks" instead of "seconds" (or minutes?), "ta" for "bye" - actually I think "tata" is used in England too but my gut feeling is that it's extremely passé or even considered pedantic now.

From the Avon Walk Article

"Its also refreshing to see Reese Witherspoon out and about without Jake"

hmmm - interesting choice of words

I'm alitle confused on the dates of these sitings too. Washington DC and SC are pretty far apart. At least 2 hours by air. I cant see how she would be doing all of those things on Saturday and be available all day long on Sunday for a walk. If some of it occurred on Friday it might be more believable. Are they posting this stuff the day after it happens? I'm starting to think these sitings are made up. Especially this hotel story.

Anonymous said...

You have to remember that Reese basically popped in to see Jake on the way to her Avon commitments. If she didn't have that walk, she would have gone nowhere near that movie set.
Once again, everything they do is out on the streets.
It makes the time go faster when you don't have to spend too much of it alone indoors.

I don't believe in Reeke because of how they present themselves, no chemistry and the fact that they don't look like two people who've been intimate.

It has nothing to do with sexuality or whether I believe Jaustin are together or not.

So I don't think we can write Austin dating Sophia down as a lie because it may well have happened whilst Toothy and Goose/Fox were on the outs.

Anonymous said...

I tell you what is made up - the smooching in the Hominy line at Perez story. We don't have to look miles for a possible culprit either.
