Standing Up Standing Out

The worlds eyes are turned to Beijing looking toward the athletes and their achievements, but maybe the need is to look at the people who live there. There are only a handful of athletes from more open countries who are out at these Olympic games versus a larger LGTB community that is existing under Chinese rule.

Today's Out Spotlight focuses on the LGTB community in China. Despite being counter to the conformity that Chinese government demands of their citizens, these individuals are living their lives and building a LGTB community to support each other.

Common Language is a magazine written, published and distributed through their postal system when gay literature and movies are banned by their government. They have a camp each summer a gathering to come together, to be better activists. Who realized that there would be LGBT library and a LGBT center in a nation that to outsiders seems intolerant to homosexuality. It shows that there are people who are standing up to their government, and living the lives they want to have.

So today's spotlight is about those people, taking risks and living their lives.

OMG Olympic Moment
Swimming

"My will to live completely overcame my desire to win."

That was the reaction of 19-year-old Hungarian Alfred Hajos after he won the 1200 metres freestyle at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. He won by being the first swimmer to reach shore after a boat had left everyone in the icy waters of the Mediterranean.

Olympic swimming has come a long way, to temperature-controlled 50-metre pools, wave-killing gutters, lane markers designed to reduce turbulence, and status as one of the Games' glamour events. It is far removed from those early days.

There were the venues, from the Bay of Zea in 1896, to Paris's River Seine in 1900, to a 100-metre pool constructed inside the athletics track in 1908. Then there were the events, from a 100-metre race for Greek sailors in 1896, to underwater and obstacle races in 1900, to a "plunge for distance" in 1908. That event involved a standing dive, with contestants then remaining motionless for 60 seconds, or until their heads broke the surface - whichever came first.

Of course today the world is celebrating the incredible athletic accomplishment of Michael Phelps who won 8 gold medals in a single Olympics, breaking the 36 year achievement of 7 golds by swimmer Mark Spitz in the 1972 Munich games.

Congratulations Michael!

OMG's Olympic take. Austin seems to have been born in the water, mentioning in interviews that he was on waterskis before he could walk, and in the water when a few months old. Seriously someone should just check to see if he has webbed feet. And if they ever do a remake of The Man from Atlantis , casting agents should just look no futher. Now Jake and swimmming? Well that's more to do with the suits than that the water. Before the new high tech racers, swimmers were know for their speedos. And Jake is famously known on a dare to go into a store, strip down put one on and just walk out of the store when he was younger. Yeah someone did have a chat with the mall cops for that one.

Congrats to Mike Phelps. Unbelievable accomphishment.

Congrats to Ellen and Portia. I hope they are on the cover of people. It is the biggest story in the entertainment industry this week.

Congrats to any Gay Chinese citizen who would have the courage to come out in a country like China. It is tough enough here in the USA one can only imagine what it would be like in China.

Excellent spotlight today, Special. What Tom said. How much, much harder it'd be in China, I would think. So much is repressed there.

Adorable picture of Austin! It doesn't always seem like his hair is always wavy/curly like it is in other pictures. Jake's white/black trunks are about what I'm used to seeing now, I guess. I remember when guys' shorts/swim trunks/bb shorts all grew toward their knees & I had asked, "What the heck?" Now, I see a pair of speedos or short shorts and it seems like they're so tiny, LOL!!

Now I ask "What the heck???" about the price of doughnuts. It must've been awhile since I bought some. I bought 2 @ Fluffy Fresh Donuts this am and it cost $1.94. That's almost 1 dollar for each one. Wouldn't complain as much if they were Daylight Donuts, at least. Think I'll be lapping up each & every single crumb off the table when I eat these things. :-,

PG
You make me think back to Lamar's Donuts in KC. The cream filled Long Johns. Six inches you're fine, 9 oh momma,I don't know if I can this, and then finish the whole 12 you're like I need a nap.

Oh now I really need to get to church.

Great Spotlight today Special. Thanks for posting that video too. Very informative.

Congrats Ellen and Portia : )

prairiegirl said...

Yes, Special, a Lamar's donut, hot & fresh out of the oven. Plain glazed, please! Or how bout a Krispy Kreme, right off the oven belt? MMMMMMM

Oh, and the plain cake covered in chocolate today was DELISH!!!!

What is everyone's favorite fast food breakfast weakness? Wanna hear it today. And it can't be oatmeal or English muffin or something healthy like that either! Taco Bueno breakfast quesadilla, McD's or Hardee's plain sausage biscuit.
Those're mine.
Don't feel bad if you don't wanna play along. But I'd love to hear it. Get the salivary glands going.

I don't eat fast food for breakfast. Where I live, which is continental Europe, people eat cereal, sandwiches, croissants, eggs or fruit for breakfast.

I can't even imaging eating fast food in the morning. No offence.

Hi guys! I've been away from the fandom these last few days because of family matters and I've started to catch up. But first things first: a very happy and (so sorry) belated birthday to (((OMG)))! Whatever happens in the future, I truly hope we'll all be here next year to celebrate one more anniversary together. :)

Now that's truly amazing, I never thought they'd had the courage and resilience to go that far. Thanks for those insights about that little known but very inspiring community.

Haaaa, Baby I Love You. :) Does anybody know how many versions have been made of that great song? A true classic and just the right tune to celebrate the sunshiny days we're finally starting to get over here.

Have a lovely Sunday everybody!

prairiegirl said...

You fill me with shame, no offence. Yeah, during the week, I'm all about a bowl of 8-12 gr fiber cereal, S/Fast breakfast bar, or Quaker Breakfast cookie, but on weekends, sorry, I don't always do that. On Sunday, especially.
Oh! And don't even mention a breakfast buffet, LOLLLL!! Please pass the gravy for my scrambled eggs. : )
You guys are much healthier minded than me, I guess. : (

You guys are killing me with the donut talk. I love breakfast, be it eggs or "junk" like gooey rolls.

Glad to see you back Frenchy.

A few weeks ago Nightline die a series on China, and they had a segment on the LGBT community. Things are more open, but one thing hasn't changed, they are still expected to get married. From some of the interviews they had it appears that a lot of people have their open, gay years while very young, then they conform and get married.

Wow, congratulations due all around I see - to the courageous LGBT community in China, Ellen and Portia, and Michael Phelps! Best wishes to Ellen and Portia for a long and happy life together. Aww, love this song too. A Krispy Kreme donut, right off the belt, is one of life's great pleasures. But it has to be right off the belt. ;) Nice pic of Austin cutie in the water and one of my faves of Jake. Have a great day, all.

Can you imagine, Destiny? I think life in China has to be so different from what we're used to. I'd like to go there & experience what it's like so I'd know better how it is. That's the only true way to know how it is. Not saying I want to live there, just visit. Heck, can't even make it to NYC or DC, two American frontiers I have yet to conquer but dying to visit someday.

First Look at Ellen & Portia's Wedding

Ellen cant't take her eyes off Portia in the pics! Portia looks beautiful. She totally looks in love with Ellen. They go good together lookswise.

Unlike Rosie ODonnell and Kelli. Never saw the attraction with those 2. Maybe opposites attract but whenever I see R&K together I always think Kelli could do so much better. Sorry don't mean to offend anyone. Just my opinion.

I have to say I was surprised when Ellen and Portia first got together 4 years ago. I really liked Anne Heche and Ellen together. Portia seemed at first [to me] like she would be difficult [don't ask me why]. But what do I know?! I hope they are happy and stay married forever.

^^ my g*d could I say 'together' any more times [4]?!!

If you ever want to come here, let me know PG. We have an extra room. Plus you would get to meet Tink!

Re breakfast- my favorite thing to eat is pumpkin crisp.

Spesh, that video is awesome. I wonder if there is a way that folks outside of China can support the LGBT community.

The pics of Ellen and Portia are great. They both look beautiful. I hope Tom is right and People covers it.

Good to see some positive news for a change. The LGTB actions in China just confirm that ones true nature can not be supressed. I admire their courage. Also wish Ellen much happiness. She has certainly earned it.

Have we ever seen a bad picture of Austin? He has the most beautiful smile.

Forgot to say- how about Dara Torres?! She almost won the gold at age 41. Too fabulous. And then she turned around and swam the anchor leg of the 4x100 medley relay after the medal ceremony and won another silver. I loved it after the medal ceremony when Dara was saying, "I have to go now" to the officials. Yeah, she kind of did have to go. The relay was in 4 minutes!

Just realized that the nail polish I have on today, Pink Promise, would perfectly match Portia's gown. Pink Promise is very pale pink and sparkly.

I missed Dara last night, but I did see her earlier in the week. It's very inspirational to see someone north of 40 excelling in a sport like swimming.

Ellen and Portia look so cute and happy. I really like the way they dressed for the wedding, especially Portia's dress.

Comment from a person who attended a ‘Brothers’ test screening at Sony a month ago:

"Jake and Portman were sweet; Sam Shepard adds a small but interesting motivation that I don't remember from the other version; Tobey is the revelation."

owned by Maguire?

will ‘Brothers’ be screened at the Toronto Film Festival?

prairiegirl said...

As the summer is drawing closer & closer to an end, it is getting exciting that promotion of Brothers will be not that far behind. It'll be here before one knows it. And with it, will there be any new revelations?

Re breakfast- my favorite thing to eat is pumpkin crisp.

Is that like a 9 x 13 dish, like pumpkin pie with a crumb topping? I've got a great recipe for one called Pumpkin Crunch. Wonder if they're alike.

Hey, and Wicked, thanks for the kind offer. I aim to get up there; never been to the upper northeast, Florida being the furtherest north I've ever been. But that's south. There're so many things to do where you live, have you seen all the major ones?

And where in the heck again is Austin? Austin sightings are few & far between, aren't they? That guy knows how to stay below the radar; you'd think he was a civilian ; )

prairiegirl said...

One other comment, another one of those revelations that come slow on the draw for ol witless here.

Out of the time that Jake's been filming in Morocco, the one & only sighting we've had was when you know who was there. Either she carries those camera-toting boys along with her everywhere she goes in that big tote bag purse, which judging by her coverage still in the States, albeit Jakeless, is true in itself, or that weekend was a real, strictly business expense. And if that was the case, would be curious to know exactly how long she was there. Was it really just a weekend, we don't know. Won't know.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure she left Morocco as soon as possible.

Yep. Deeeelish!

Nope, not even close. So often us natives don't go to museums or attractions unless someone comes in from out of town. (Hint, hint!) When Spesh was here I finally saw the Botanical Gardens. It took her visit to get me there.

Cool, short clip of Austin dancing at Spooky's.

ain't that the truth! the tourists visiting know more about our towns than we do!

PG I'm sure there are sights where you are or in your own big city that you havent seen!
