Banking on It

Forbes.com came out with their Star Currency listing. "The project's primary goal is to gain insight from the global entertainment industry regarding 1,400-plus actors in today's worldwide marketplace from a financial perspective. Many elements contribute to the financing of a film as well as its ultimate theatrical box-office performance and post-theatrical life--the actor's involvement being one of the central components. This confidential survey, while subjective, seeks to evaluate the actor's impact in a number of areas."

"Voters were asked to consider a number of elements regarding the actor's participation in a film as they applied in the market at the time of the survey. Criteria used were:

--The amount of financing that flows to a project is significantly determined by the individual actor's presence in a film.

--The individual actor's presence in a film guarantees theatrical distribution.

--The individual actor's presence significantly drives the film's theatrical box-office performance."

[Forbes]

The top ten is probably who you can all guess Will Smith top of the heap , with Johnny Depp, Leo, Angelina and Brad all tied for second, then Tom Hanks, Clooney, Denzel, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson rounding out the top ten.

Where did Jake rank? 52nd. But before discussion starts there are a few things about the list that are interesting.

There are only 8 actors under 30 who made the list. Only two actors ranked higher than Jake. Shia LeBeouf (rank 33) and Kiera Knightly (rank 42). There were 4 male actors under 30 who broke the top 100, besides Shia and Jake, Seth Rogen (86)and James McAvoy(86).

Shia looks to be more of action star, Seth seems to be covering comedy, and James and Jake? Where do they fit .... is HW slotting them into their leading man for that age group? Is Jake a traditional leading man? Or will he be more bankable as something else? Is this why he took PoP? What do you see him as?

Jake has talked about admiring Matt Damon's career path. Could you see him following a similar path over the next ten year?

Maggie was ranked at 200, and Peter at 214.

#52 Jake Gyllenhaal

Interesting that Maggie and Peter did so well. Probably has to do with their ability to get audiences for the indie films they do.

((((((((AG))))))))) Thinking of you, it's a terribe thing.

Wow, I only watched Westminster a little this year, but I did see Stump in all her silky-coated beauty. Congrats to her!

Interesting post today, Jake has quite a career ahead of him. :)

50 degrees here today, PG, a heat wave! ;)

What do you see him as?

Character and lead actor rolled in one?

Anonymous said...

YES!!! Most definitely, I actually almost prefer character actors, there's more depth, and well, character. :) After seeing the Wrestler, I was amazed at Mickey Rourke's performance. Just shining.

Sorry, Stump is a he, not a she, and he has two sons, Root and Forest. :)

My faves are the German Shepherds, Goldens, and Huskies. ;)

The latest "aww!" Dear Ted:
I saw some recent pictures of Reese Witherspoon, and it looked like she may be preggers in a couple of them. What do you think? Any chance she is going for No. 3? Is this why Jake and Reese seem so happy out and about lately, along with trips to the doctor's office? What's your take?

Dear Tot Tracker:
It would be the most brilliant PR procreation since Angelina started breeding with Brad.

Dear Ted:
It's been over a year since Heath died, but Jake Gyllenhaal still hasn't said much publicly regarding Heath in remembrance. I thought they were friends? Thought it was very strange for Jake not to issue a statement when Heath died
—Elle

Dear Mourning Time:
Since when did Jake become Heath's spokesman? I don't think it's necessary for him to issue any public statement about Heath, that's not what counts when truly remembering someone.

Dear Ted:
What is with Jen Aniston? She picks these quirky meaningless movies to play a "Rachel" character, and also they oddly mimic her real life. He's Just Not That Into You and now The Baster? Is she laughing at herself all the way to the bank?
—Kac

Dear Bang for Your Buck:
You bet, hon. Angie hasn't won an Oscar recently, so why should that be Jen's goal? She wants to take that America's Sweetheart crown back from Witherbabe.

IUC: Toothy Update…

Update: The Hollywood mogul who claims he was lovers with Toothy made it clear in an email to me last night under no terms was he afraid to come out. “Almost every studio exec I know is gay,” he said. “In this case I had to do everything to protect his (Toothy) career and well being. Otherwise, it would have been career suicide for him. Everyone in this town knows I’m queer and never in a million years would I try to hide it.”

Wondering: Reese is #32 on the list.

Chris: Reese bought the house with Ryan and she asked for it in the divorce, so the lease is in her name only. It's a lot smaller than I imagined.

What was the point of taking an ariel shot of her place? To tie in with the London flat story?

1 thing I'm dreading: Reeke valentine fest. For fun heres my Reeke photo op story prediction. People: Jake Proposes and Reese Says........... YES!!!!!!!

Perfect time for the Ian backslash to start. I wonder if Maggie will get dragged into a NY photo op if Reeke is there. Hopes not.

I dunno how the Forbes rating will go if/after that. I don't like Forbes, its a trophy magazine not serious economics imo.

Wheres PG and Tom Jersey?

Been a busy week Chris. Just got home. Damn seems like Ted is saying that Jake and reese could be doing the dirty. That sure is a change in his tune.

Ted has been easy on Jake regarding the Heath issue. He told us to be patient at first and now he saying Jake didnt have to say anything. I disagree big time with Ted on that one.

Still hoping to see Jake in Philly on Valentines Day. Rufus will be in town. I cant wait.

Hey Chris, I'm around. I was working on a post at lunchtime, got distracted talking to my lil buddy since we were the only ones for awhile in the office while everybody else went out (a rarity anymore!), came back, wasn't happy with it, and scrapped the whole thing. Oh, gosh, but I'm going to interrupt this one, too, for a bit. The Seinfeld episode with the Merv Griffin set, George hitting the squirrel in the road, and Elaine with the "office sidler" is on now and it just kills me. I have got to watch it & have some laughs.

Tom where do you get that?

Dear Ted:
I saw some recent pictures of Reese Witherspoon, and it looked like she may be preggers in a couple of them. What do you think? Any chance she is going for No. 3? Is this why Jake and Reese seem so happy out and about lately, along with trips to the doctor's office? What's your take?
—Me Curious

Dear Tot Tracker:
It would be the most brilliant PR procreation since Angelina started breeding with Brad.

Tom, "It would be the most brilliant PR procreation" doesn't say Reeke is having sex.

1st: "IT WOULD BE" means IF, as in a scenario, a possibility. It doesn't mean it is a FACT.

2nd: "brilliant PR procreation" to me means a PR STORY, story being the operative word. PR Fiction.

I saw a comment on AT where someone said Reese has a fat belly not a glow (lol). Where did Ted get that "Glow" headline anyway? Anyone can see she's been sour not glowing and the "bump" has been there for the last 2 years.

Another thing the write says "going to dr visits together" Huh? The phot ops the writer is talking about is 1. Reese was at dr office (remember "screaming midget" pics?) and then 2. the next day there was Reese alone in Jake's car while he went in a med building. WTF? I wouldn't call those "dr visits together" and why Ted accepts what the writer says is weird or lazy.

Yeah Reeke having a very "public" baby would be a good way to Jake to "prove" his straightness except: in vitro technology today doesn't guarantee that the father of the child actually had sex with the mother (you know there would always be doubts where Reeke is concerned), wouold and could Reese physically have a third child, and the professional work she loses and the "knocked-up again" outside of marriage (like she was with Ryan) image it gives her, how far will Reeke go, is it really worth it? Also the child if Reese had one doesn't mean its Jake's.

Don't know why but something with the "tot" Ted calls the writer bothers me. (Special and destiny your affecting me lol) I keep thinking "tater tot" and wondering if Ted means something. Mr Potato Head? Idaho? Jake is boiled, mashed, and twice baked? French fry?

The only difference is Chris is that Ted has always said no sex. Here it sounds like he isnt ruling it out anymore. I hope I am wrong buddy.

Reading the letters involving Jake and Toothy it seems like Ted has taken a turn this week. Not sure what is going on especially with Ian supposingly outing Jake after having Ted on his website. Something seems different. Maybe it is just that Ted is trying to keep us all interested. Jake has lost a lot of fans.

Anonymous said...

Jersey Tom, like the Kinsey scale, my own feelings for Jake run a spectrum with lust on one end and maternal concern on the other. Where I fall on any given day depends on how he looks and what he is up to. I think Ted is the same way with paternal on one end. I think he genuinely likes Jake/toothy, is concerned about his happiness and welfare, and some days he just cuts Jake some slack. After all most times Ted has been pretty brutal. A touch of guilt pops in once in a while too. I don't read too much into the pregnancy reply. Anyone looking at the whole series of pics that day could plainly see it was only one pic. The shirt just ballooned while she was cringing to pull away from Jake.

Special K said...

Nice to know that Jake is getting some time in NYC and that's he's there for Maggie and Peter. And of course Ms. Ramona. You do have to wonder if Mr. Nichols is doing some research for Lincoln Boothe at the moment as well. ; )

It is is interesting that Ted used the word Tot. And that would be a good word for Baby T. Since if the timeline is correct will be a tottering two this year.

prairiegirl said...

Hi guys. I reacted at first just like you, Tom. It just sounded so obvious. But then Ted doesn't usually just give a straight yes/no answer, it seems. Chris gives some of the reasons why I would argue against Reese deciding to get pregnant. I just don't think those pictures tell the truth only because she's inconsistant in how she appears photo to photo. At times, it appears she doesn't have a flat ab and then in another, she does.

I'm just kind of tired of the whole thing; really, really getting fed up with all of it. With this Ian guy and his string-it-along stories, touting the next one like the weather guy on your local 10 o'clock news, telling you to stay tuned later on in the show for our complete forecast, including just how much snow we could get. Like Wicked & Destiny said, if you have something, for gosh sakes, just spill it. Stop dragging it out.

There's just so much right now floating around and some of what Ian says is conflicting with what Ted has insinuated/said all this time during his TT bi's. I don't like it when I don't know anymore who's telling the truth, what's a photo op, what's not, did Jake really want to come out of the closet or does he now really like the bearding. And if so, why?

If Jake is happy to keep doing the bearding, keep doing the big lie, then why on earth am I continuing to follow this guy? Right now, I'm just trying to find something about him that makes me still want to care. And no one is asking me to be a fan, I understand that. It's purely my decision; got no right to lay any claims or criticisms since all I need to do is just turn away.

And right now, for me, it just comes down to this. When there are people out in this world who would give anything for a second lease on life, a clean bill of health, another chance to correct a wrong, another day to just try again to get it right, and then I see 2 people like Jake and Reese playing their lives like it's a 6-act theatrical piece with all the time in the world to try & control their own destiny, well, it just makes me apathetic. Doesn't even make me sad anymore because it's a complete waste of my time.

So, I'll just hang back and see what else unfolds. After awhile, I need something concrete, something true, something tangible, something that will tell me I'm not wasting time supporting something that maybe isn't being so reluctantly hidden after all. If all 3 parties are perfectly happy with the way things are, then why on earth would I argue.

Everyone have a good night. I've got to step out for a bit, get a couple lil' Valentine items. Got class tomorrow night and then it's dogsitting time.

prairiegirl said...

Man, I had to come back, reread what I had posted, try & make sure it didn't sound too woeful.

Does anybody else ever get fed up with it all? Maybe I just need to laugh it all off. Maybe all our meetings at work this week is what's making me be all serious. Hopefully, tomorrow there'll be a great picture of Jake in NYC that'll make me forget my big spiel up there.

Okay, at least that's a bit more positive. Sweet dreams, everyone!

Special K said...

Getting back to today's post for a minute. What I find interesting is that there are few actors in that 22-29 range in Hollywood. Most of the leading men are in their mid 30-late 40's. Where is the next wave of leading men? Heath would have been one of them, but the numbers are small. I can see how TPTB would put the pressure on Jake because they think they can't lose another leading man, but irony is that the more pressure they put on him - they won't lose a leading man, but will lose their audience.

Anonymous said...

PrairieGirl, your first post at 8:59 makes a lot of sense to me. The best I've read all day.

destiny said...

It's rare to see young guys on lists like that I think because men get the juicy roles in their 30s and 40s generally, and it takes awhile for them to build a career. Also, I think people don't vote for someone they think will not have staying power.

With women it happens in their 20s, and often heads south as they get older.

I also suspect that with lists like this, while the top of the list is a pretty sure thing, lower down may be subject more to voter's whims, what type of actor is in style at the moment, what they've done recently, etc. Looking at the women especially I was surprised at a lot of it, for example how low down the list a lot of the women are, like Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore, whose movies tend to do pretty well. I suspect they lost some votes for factors like not being cool enough and just for being women.

Special K: Let's begin by comparing birth dates: Matt Damon: 1970; Leo DiCaprio: 1974; Jake Gyllenhaal: 1980; Shia LaBeouf: 1986. The names line up nicely. And obviously, Jake is lagging behind per the Forbes list (as if we didn't know already). IMO, this the raison d'être of Prince of Persia i.e. Jake is being given the opportunity by HW to fall in place. However, if you compare the GQ interviews of Matt and Jake, Jake still has some grounds to cover - the gap is enormous. Probably, Jake needs a stable mentor, and I can see David Fincher filling in. That is why the decision on Torso is so critical, IMO. I think both Brothers and POP will do well and the A-list line-up will fall in place eventually. Let's wait and see!

Special K said...

Jake is being given the opportunity by HW to fall in place.

But does Jake truly want to fall in place?

destiny said...

Jake does seem to be one of the only young actors without a mentor, that's something I've noticed before.

Anonymous said...

Why wouldn't he? This is the profession he's chosen. I don't think he goes into his job saying "I'm only going to give 50% today." An actor's life is so fleeting and so unstable, you have to do what you need to do to get your next job, your next paycheck. If he didn't want to "fall in place" he'd be back bussing tables in Manhattan.

Special K said...

I can see Jake gravitating to Fincher as a mentor. Why? Because Fincher creates movies that are not what they seem on the first pass, a Fincher film is something that you have to go back and watch over again to get the whole story. And that is similar to who Jake likes to be.

Also Fincher's perfectionism. Maggie has talked about Jake having a place for everything. I can see some kindred spirit in that.

What I meant about truly wanting to fall in, for all Jake falling in line, he has a rebellious streak that tends breaks out in moments from too much towing the line.

Anonymous said...

But does Jake truly want to fall in place?

Dumb question, Special K. Obviously, he does, otherwise he wouldn't beard. But, IMO, there could be three possible outcomes:
1. He falls in line, makes money and moves out of HW with clout.
2. He makes money, switches to directing and moves out of paparazzi scrutiny (life of directors, I guess, is too boring).
3. He switches profession - as a chef.
Outcome of all three may lead to Godot coming home for dinner - it is, therefore, worth the wait.

Special K said...

One more thing.

I think Jake likes that Fincher has a healthy disrespect of the industry, while still working in it.

Anonymous said...

What I meant about truly wanting to fall in, for all Jake falling in line, he has a rebellious streak that tends breaks out in moments from too much towing the line.

Oops, I spoke too soon. Sorry.
Too many gag reflexes may be toning down the rebellious streak...

I think Jake likes that Fincher has a healthy disrespect of the industry, while still working in it.

Very good observation! Jake's SBIFF speech was way too sarcastic - quite brave for #52 on Forbes list.

Anonymous said...

Priarie Girl, new Stranded drabble. Short but sweet. It will put a smile on your face.

I dont quite see Jake as rebellious yet. His desire to be liked above all still too strong. Sure he has moments and stuff slips out, but I feel like he has not hit his teens yet, that the big rebellion is still building up, like a volcano.

destiny said...

For now Jake has chosen to fall into line by bearding and avoiding doing anything that could remotely offend anyone. Jake has clearly done this because he wants those big mainstream projects like PoP, the Moon Project and the Namath bio instead of the independent films he mostly made in the past. I haven't seen any signs of anything rebellious in what, a year or more? Quite frankly there are days when I doubt we'll ever see that side of Jake again. And by that I mean something genuine, not something that is manufactured and safe, but meant to give the impression of color.

What I fail to see is how Jake and the people advising him seem to think he's going to become a big star by making him as bland as white bread.

Anonymous said...

Holy crap new pics on IHJ. Jake in NY. He looks cold! He's in a white t shirt, jeans and a long beautiful coat. Love the coat. Sleeves look awfully long, tho. Not that I'm complaining. heh

destiny said...

Having a mentor has its pluses and minuses. On the one hand, you get steady work and someone who understands your strengths and weaknesses. On the other, you get a bigger variety of roles and experiences by working for different people.

And can I just say, I don't get Shia's appeal at all. I think he is bland, and he's just had the luck to have mentors who always manage to make movies that do very well at the box office. I can't see him bringing in the audiences on his own.

destiny said...

I love the coat too, it really makes him look like he has long legs. And he does look cold, so based on that my guess is the pictures were actually taken Friday or Saturday, when it was still very cold in New York. The past 3 days it's been around 60 in NYC during the day, positively balmy for this time of year.

Great coat, and somehow I can see it being envied by someone else who love similar coats. ; ) It does look like he picked it up while he was in NY. And you're right Destiny it has to be earlier, because even up here in Boston are having a heatwave for us - it was in the 50's here today.

I always like pictures of Jake in NY, there is something about him in the city.

Scruffy looking Jake looks great in NYC. Never understood why people hold their coats Jackets etc. together with their hands, why not just button / zip it up. I notice this alot. I think we need to pitch in money to help Jake buy new shoes. I don't think he will ever let those shoes / boots go. Just like the jeans with the bleach stain on them.

Anonymous said...
