Cowboy up!

My Darling Clementine was on last weekend on AMC, and couldn't help myself I had to watch it again. If you haven't seen it, get a copy. Henry Fonda, Victor Mature, Ward Bond, Gabby Hayes. Of course it is the story of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday at the shoot out at the O.K.Corral. Maybe Westerns aren't your thing but just watch it for the masterpiece John Ford created, and if you say you don't like black & white movie, try this one, what Ford does with lights and darks and shadows will make forget you are watching in black & white. But this isn't about waxing on about My Darling Clementine, it is the jumping off point for today's post.

Reading the history of Wyatt Earp you know that he was not without his brothers, Virgil, Morgan, and James. And the most recent incarnation of Morgan Earp was played by Mr. Nichols. How can you forget a thumbsucking Morgan Earp? Austin, I know it was Milch's vision, but seriously what would Ward Bond have thought?

Now Austin loves Westerns, comes from Texas, can ride a horse (which we saw in Deadwood, for once proving he wasn't lying, unlike some of the others he's claimed - and a Texan lying about horse riding, that could getcha in some deep shit) and has played an iconic figure in history of the Old West. What's a boy to do now? Hook up with some Jewish cowboys. Wait hasn't he done that? Not talking about that, Brothers, wait ... no no that's another movie with... Hell... try and get a meeting with the Coen Brothers who are going Western.

Many have talked about Austin fitting into the Coen Brothers movies before and this one, well, I think might be it. Joel and Ethan Coen are retelling True Grit. It is not the traditional remake, would expect anything traditional? It will be more faithful to the Charles Portis book than the 1969 picture staring John Wayne.

Portis' novel is about a 14-year-old tomboy, Mattie Ross, on a mission of "justice", which involves avenging her father's death. She recruits a tough old marshal, "Rooster" Cogburn, because he has "grit", and a reputation of getting the job done. The two are joined by a Texas Ranger, La Boeuf, who is looking for the same man for a separate murder in Texas. They track her father's killer in hostile Indian territory. The Coen Brothers will retelling the story from the girls perspective.

Trivia to impress your friends: The 1969 movie was the only Academy Award John Wayne ever received, for his performance as Marshall "Rooster" Cogburn.

So listen up Mr.Nichols get on the phone and get your agent on top of La Bouef. Glen Campbell, who Wayne hand picked for the part, got a Golden Globe for it and he was from Arkansas. What could a Texas boy do with it. And what Texas boy wouldn't want to play a Texas Ranger?

Austin quirkiness would fit in the the bandwagon of players the Coens like to set up shop with. Of course the Coen Brothers you know would have the same reaction to the studio execs who'd suggest to cast Shia LaBeouf as La Boeuf as the rest of us. "You squirrel-headed bastard!"

Rooster Cogburn: Damn that Texan - when you need him, he's dead.

LaBoeuf: I ain't dead yet, you bushwhacker. Hang on.

Austin as Morgan Earp is one of my very favorites. Too bad they canceled Deadwood. That could have been a fun recurring role for him. Yes, he does belong in a western.

I went back to WFT2 and clicked on the link re the POP preview. The author actually saw clips of several Disney movies, all of which she said favorable things about, except POP. As respects POP, she was clearly trying to be polite. I think bits and pieces of info will start to leak now as we are nearing 1 year to showtime.

I loved Austin in Deadwood, and I would love to see him in another Western. I like how he looks in that cowboy hat you added to the Lakers photo.

I don't know why, but I keep thinking of Blazing Saddles, probably because I'd like to see Austin do a really good comedy.

Hello all

Austin with this hat is pretty sexy I would say But for a reason I don't know I can't imaginate him in western.
Austin ,as far I am concerned, looks like more a character escaped from John fidgerald Kennedy'novel, those delicate , coming from upper class's characters, so distinguished and witty.

He is more "the great Gasby" you know.
However, he would be good in comedy too lol, he seems fun to work with and has this kind of crazyness so lovabe.

Thanks for the info covering. Has John Litglow been eliminated? I loved Third Rock from the Sun. It was hysterical when they got scared by the jello:-)

from Billy yesterday :
you're busy tonight Reese Defender Troll. I do admit you have a big job. Three years ago it was rare to see a tiny number of anti-Reese posts and now they are everywhere!! You must be exhausted. Good thing you're not really on the payroll. They would have fired you by now. Good luck to you.

LOL, this was actually funny. Considering it is quite obvious there is a person from this site (and I know exactly who) who is the one posting everywhere she can over and over again her her anti-Reese stuff, I think I know who must be feeling exhausted, darling! Anti Reese posts everywhere from the same person don't really count, do they, lol! As for payroll, are you on any?

London TB you give me an other idea!

Why not a remake of "Macadam cowboy" with our boys!
Austin in John voght's role and Jake in Dustin'part!!!!

it would be so great no!

Ok enough with my cinematic fantasies LOL, I keep it for my dream tonight.

London - Austin as Joe Buck? (and not from Fox Sports) Hmmmmm....
Who would play Ratso Rizzo?

I do see him in a Gatsbyesque way, but would love to see him really play against type.

Would love to see him do something comedic and I think he does too if he inspired by Peter Sellers. I could see him really drawn to the Coens work.

I wonder if he was envious of Jake doing a satire like Nailed.

As only Kathy Griffin can:

"Why does anyone even care if gay people get married?...You would never in a million years go up to a person of color and say 'well, you know I hear that Black people want to get married now. I mean, it's fine if they live together." You would cringe, would you not? 'I hear that Mexicans want to vote! There goes the neighborhood!' Right? It would sound absolutelly silly. And yet, across the state, people are having dinner conversations saying, 'well, do gay people really have the right to get married?' Yes! Domestic union, domestic partnership is not the same."

Kathy Griffin to those opposed to Prop 8: 'What the F*ck is it to You?'

Bravo to Kathy Griffin.

Blazing Saddles, Joe Buck - what great ideas. I can just see Austin having a good time with those. This Lincoln Booth thing sounds OK, but I am guessing it is a very small film.

I do wonder what got the trolls back up. Seems like it came out of left field. Maybe it was just our turn. No matter what they do, OMG and WFT2 are still more popular than ever.

Elinor, you gotta see him in Deadwood.

I could definitely see Austin in a Gatsby type role. He has the looks and charm for it. I haven't seen him in Deadwood. I'll have to check that out. I'm not into westerns too much but id like to see what he does with the character. He actually looks great in the pic you posted. Midnight Cowboy..hmm....that could be interesting ; )

Kathy Griffin is a blast. I have to say I really did like her reality show.

Austin is awesome in Deadwood. He spouts Milch's dialogue as if he's been talking that way his entire life.

Special K said...

What's amazing about Deadwood is that Milch wrote the whole in thing in blank verse, and modified iambic parameter for some of it. Definitely Shakespeare in the Old West.

prairiegirl said...

Hey, is Deadwood a movie? Or was it an HBO series? I've seen these pictures before of Austin in western gear but had no idea where they were from.

Special K said...

Deadwood was a series that David Milch did for HBO. Austin got the part of Morgan Earp for two episodes in Season 3 (Leviathan Smiles & Amateur Night). From that part Milch picked Austin for John.

PG - Be warned - Deadwood has a lot, I mean a lot of profanity (more that JFC)

I just watched the latest SGP video, Austin looks really good, I wish I could blow up the video screen bigger. And I think it's funny the way he says "because it's Barbara" when Hilarie asks him why he's laughing after she starts talking about Streisand. It's also cute how Hilarie says she'll never get away from being so waspy.

Special K said...

Well Austin and Barbra has one thing in common. - Their birthday, April 24th.

Love that Deadwood pic of Austin.

There's just something about a man, a fine looking man, sitting on a horse.

My, my, oh, my!

prairiegirl said...

^^^ lol, you bet there's something, 'is it just me'.

Yeah, thanks for the tip, Special. I doubt I'd rent it anyway. I'm sure it's a shoot 'em up, anyway, and I'm not into that. I can handle "Santa Fe Trail" with Errol Flynn, but today's westerns would probably be a lot more graphic. Not my cup of tea.

Phew. Guys, would someone rub the back of my neck, please? I'm all tense & exhausted. Criminetley's.

As some may have seen, I've spent an evening over at WFT2 trying to talk to someone, but it's like we're both just going to bang heads, so what's the point. Just forget it. But aaaaarggghhhuhhhh...dangit, it just drives me absolutely nuts.

I need to go to bed & just drop it. I need to just stop looking is what I need to do.
It's so unproductive and I just end up getting snarly and it's just such a waste of energy & time. There's nothing I can do about it. There's nothing I can do about it. There's not a thing I can do about it.

Like a Rhinestone Cowboy.
Riding out on a horse in a star spangled rodeo.
Like a Rhinestone Cowboy.
Getting cards & letters from people I don't even know...

This has been great today. Ol' Glen Campbell. Man, talk about going back.

There'll be a load of compromisin'
On the road to my horizon,
But I'm gonna be where the lights are shining on me...
Like a Rhinestone Cowboy...
Riding out on a horse in a star spangled rodeo...

Ahhhhh....great stuff, Special.

Prairie Girl, I find it hard to follow the conversation at WFT2 sometimes, especially when a lot of newcomers or trolls are present. All the anons make it hard to zero in on a person's point of view and the topics can be all over the place. I still love the site of course, but some days try my patience.
