Out Spotlight LXVIII

Today's Out Spotlight is Dr. James B. Pollack.

Pollack was an American astrophysicist who worked for NASA's Ames Research Center. He was a world-renowned expert in the study of planetary atmospheres and particulates. It was his work that led to many advances in our understanding of the solar system.

Born on July 9,1938, Pollack was brought up in Woodmere, Long Island by a family that was in the women's garment business in New York. He was a high school valedictorian and graduated from Princeton University in 1960. He received his master's in nuclear physics at University of California, Berkeley in 1962 and his Ph.D from Harvard in 1965, where he was a student of the famous astronomer Carl Sagan. He later became a colleague of Sagan's.

He was openly gay. Dorion Sagan told how his father, Carl, came to the defense of Pollack's lover in a problem with obtaining treatment at the university health service emergency room.

Pollack specialized in atmospheric science, especially the atmospheres of Mars and Venus. He investigated the possibility of terraforming Mars, the extinction of the dinosaurs and the possibility of nuclear winter since the 1980s with Christopher McKay and Sagan. He and Sagan correctly postulated that the seasonal color variations on Mars were caused by wind storms and dust, rather than plant life. The work of Pollack et al. (1996) on the formation of giant planets ("core accretion paradigm") is seen today as the standard model. Pollack also discovered the first real evidence that the clouds of Venus are composed of sulphuric acid. He also explained the reason for the paradox that Saturn's rings showed low microwave emissivity but high radar reflectivity.

He explored the weather on Mars using data from the Mariner 9 spacecraft and the Viking mission. On this he based ground-breaking computer simulations of winds, storms, and the general climate on that planet. An overview of Pollack's scientific career was given in the memorial talk "James B. Pollack: A Pioneer in Stardust to Planetesimals Research" held at a Astronomical Society of the Pacific 1996 symposium.

He was one of five scientists, including Sagan, who introduced the term "nuclear winter" and, with a 1983 article, ignited a bitter dispute among scientists over whether a nuclear war would be likely to result in a catastrophic global chilling.

He was a recipient of the Gerard P. Kuiper Prize in 1989 for outstanding lifetime achievement in the field of planetary science.

He participated in every major NASA flight mission since Apollo until his death in 1994 from a rare form of spinal cancer.

A crater on Mars was named in his honor in 1997.

What a cool guy! I really like that last pic. The Mrs and I just got a new 23" computer monitor with really high resolution. At first we thought that we might have to upgrade the computer in order to handle the high resolution, but the Mrs got it to work. This is why I keep her. I went back and looked at Spesh's pic from the Southern Gothic post and WOW! Spesh send me ALL your pics from that cemetery, PLEASE! Your pictures are always so amazing.

Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday dear Stubborn
Happy Birthday to you!

Hope you have a wonderful day with those who mean most to you. A little cake & ice cream, too. Maybe even a colorful balloon, huh?

Wow, nothin' like waking up to some AC/DC!! shaking head up & down....side to side.... A little bit of Angus stomping in his little black shorts. Back in Black and Shook Me All Night Long are both great songs. A catchy one - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap. Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap...

Clarity, I sure enjoyed chatting with you yesterday. I'm so glad you came.
:)

Everything here is white & glistening. Icicles are hanging off of everything, but with the sun out, things are just starting to drip. Don't think we got a whole lot, but with those winds, there are some pretty good drifts going on.

Glimpses of metal & leather chains are intriguing and look great against a white T shirt, albeit a rather, er - very gently worn T. (awwww, I can see a little robin dancing around on the ground outside the balcony. I'm sure he's trying to find a worm somewhere in all that snow. poor lil guy)
My favorite is the sneakers. I like those. He may've worn them before & I just didn't notice. But I wouldn't mind a pair of those myself. They have a Keds look to them, but they seem to have a good sole. Probably better support, too, than a Keds.

Really interesting Spotlight today, too. Man, did that guy have some serious knowledge. Nuclear science and astronomy make valedictorian almost pale in comparison. That is so sad to hear about his illness & cause of death. Spinal cancer sounds unbearably painful; I hope he did not suffer too much.

Special, the jeans, the jeans! I love the big patch on the right leg. And you know the fabric on both thighs is worn thinner than tissue and is softer than a babys butt. I love how Jake has his favorites just love it. The man is a treasure.

Hopelessly wishing said...

Jake has been looking very, very good lately and it's been great to get pics of him alone and with Maggie and Ramona. Just wish that seeing more alone Jake means that he's getting ready to move onto the Reeke breaking up stage. But, being as that for every 2 Jake alone pics we get a Reeke photo op, I know my wish is hopeless. I get the unfortunate feeling that Reeke will be going on for a long, long time.

Holy fuck, MORE new pics of Jake on IHJ. What is this? Not that I'm complaining, but the deluge..so many theories. Looks like same day (Sat), says "Shopping for Shoes in Beverly Hills" and he's carrying a different bag than the same day ones. Don't know if pix were taken inside the store or by paps or regualr folk, but the look on his face in some of them is priceless. I mean kindf of sad that he's being stalked but funny too. Of all mundane things, shopping for shoes. I would have loved to see pix of him in sitting down, in his socks trying them on, walking around the store with 1 old shoe on and 1 new shoe on, checking out the fit and feel, looking like a doofus like how we all do when we shop for shoes LOL.

hat trick said...

Did he stuff his hat down the back of his pants when he's inside the store?

*jealous* said...

Was he shopping with the brunette female with the red purse?

Calebs said...

The bag is from REI. All this shopping it looks like for sports stuff. Hope its for a good cause. Not a Reeke sports vacation photo shoot. blech

destiny said...

I love it, a gay nerd/scientist. And such a nice story about Sagan helping him and his partner out like that.

Happy Birthday Stubborn!

Nice to see Jake doing some real, practical shopping for a change, and all out on his own too.

destiny said...

He looks really odd in those pictures inside the shoe store. I find them disturbing to look at.

Fascinating OutSpotlight, as usual. I love reading about all of these accomplished people from every walk of life. It's beautiful!

Happy Birthday Stubborn, and thanks for the AC/DC. My favorite of theirs is Dirty Deeds, Done Dirt Cheap. ;)

Although I don't really enjoy Jake pictures any more, even when he is on his own, I do think the two necklace thing is interesting. The gold one has been around for ages, but the black one is new. We're probably supposed to think Reese brought it for him on their recent 'love' tour of Europe!

Did anyone see the caption for the shopping pictures on IHJ? It still mentions Reese even though the pictures are of Jake alone.

Special K said...

It looks like he put the hat and the glasses down while looking in the shoe section at REI. Maybe for some hiking? If you see him in the parking garage you can see the bag from the running store in his REI bag.

Who doesn't love a little shoes shopping?

I think he spotted photographers looking in and that's why you get the wide eye look.

And here is a glimpse of the PoP poster in Confessions of a Shopaholic. Yes someone went to the movie just to catch it. Not a FG site but a gameboy.

PoP Poster Glimpe

Special K said...

H I didn't see that the captions I saw were Shopping in BH, and Shopping in Brentwood, over on the media page. Does it say something else in the forum ?

h said...

Hi Special, yes it does. Something like 'Jake goes shopping without Reese'! I think IHJ gets the captions from the pap agency, but why do they have to mention her at all - she's not in the pictures.

Duh! said...

Jake is Reese's marketing tool.

Special K said...

The caps from the paps are what they think will get more traffic.

Just Jared said...

Meanwhile Reese apparently went shopping without Jake.

Jake, just Jake please said...

There was a IHJ Forum Eye candy caption that came with the pics for another Jake solo shopping trip last week that said somrthing like "Jake goes shopping (blah blah). Lets hope he was buying something nice for Reese"

*rolls eyes* I've noticed the IHJ Reeke pics esp the Love Tour ones have Reese in the center of the frame, its all about her. IMO IHJ needs to remember what I H J stands for, that it's not IHJ&R or IHR, and crop Reese out of some of the pics and concentrate on Jake.

When I went over to the IHJ forum I was shocked at how it's been taken over by Reese fans or ones who fawn and blather over Reeke. I won't say who it is but I saw one member who has multiple pics of Reese in her sig line and as her avatar and her title is "Jake Fan". Yeah, right. Even back when Kirsten was in most of the pics, Jake still had fans and IHJ was still about him. IHJ needs to re-think which fans are their priority.

Gag Me With A . . . said...

I honestly can't stand to go over to IHJ much anymore - and like a bad shilling, pics of them will always turn up somewhere, so I don't have to. :)

Just in case want to know more about GLBT scientists.

When looking for today's Out Spotlight, I came across NOGLSTP (pronounced nah-goal-step) The National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals.

"We are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and allies. Those of us who are able, are out and proud. We advocate equal employment opportunity, professional networking, role modeling, science education, and scientific freedom/responsibility. We practice science and engineering with PRIDE."

vanity fair said...

IHJ does seem different, but I can't tell if that is just because so many of the photos are pr-driven and reflect what the paps were directed to get for the photo opps, or if there is something more to it. I never go on the forum section, so I have no idea what kind of posters they get anymore. Could just be a reflection of the fact that so many of Jake's old fans have lost interest, leaving only the reeke fans.

m said...

Great spotlight today, and Happy Birthday Stubborn. Hope you have a super day!

I stopped reading the stuff on IHJ community about 6 months ago, maybe even longer. Between Reese and the obvious teenager age group, I lost all interest. I just view the latest photos, then leave for OMG or WFT2.

Jake does look a little deer in the headlights in those photos. I hope he was buying new biking shoes and gear for riding with Austin. OTH shooting should be just about over for the season.

m said...

Over the years there were a few aborted efforts to have an official website for Jake. I would not be surprised if IHJ did not become the official site, unofficially. They have a huge inventory of photos, videos, etc and they get them with such speed now, there has to be some PR participation. I'm not complaining. We need a steady supply of Jake photos.

Great Idea said...

I wish he would get his own, official website - with maybe a little input from him a la Austin. IHJ still has that amateur feel to it, but I'm sure PR is now involved, because of the reasons you mentioned, M.

Stubborn TB said...

Thank you to everybody wishing me a happy birthday.
And special thanks to PG for even singing ;)

site said...

I thought Jake already had his own official fansite, or was that abandoned and ignored by Jake and his PR?

x17 has a Reeke post, pics of them shopping separately and says they look like brother an sister (LOL). Again the permalink is "celebrities/reese_witherspoon". No tag for Jake. They used to tag him but he ceased to exist after Reeke started.

is separate better said...

Looks like Jake and Chinormica were in the same parking garage but whether at the same day/time or together and papped walking separately I don't know. Strange if they were, if PR or sites themselves are now splitting the pix, feeling the Reeke negative feedback.

You want to go with luck Tom? Just kidding. But I am jealous that you are there and got to go to the game.

Hope you have a great time in Florida.

Go Sox!

26 Days till my first game at Fenway!

Looks like a pap was following Jake around, or giving voice to that little cynic in me, arranged for the paps to follow him around all day so it wouldn't look like a photo opp. If the former, why?

Sad that even on his own he's still getting tagged under Reese.

Forgot to mention I talked to PG yesterday. She sounds excellent! She's promised to bring a box of Cheez-Its with her so I will know her at the airport. I hope there's nobody else there holding a box of Cheez-Its! That could get awkward.

Weird if you look at the hats, they aren't the same. Does he carry a supply in his car or were these done on different days with the same clothes and shoes? The deluge of pics is amazing but not in a totally good way. Makes me suspicious. And the sports stuff, is it his usual purchases or is it for an Egyptian trek? The way he looks almost glum about the shopping makes me think it's for a Reeke assignment, not a pleasure cruise.

No one likes the inside shoe store ones but you gotta check them out for 2 reasons, the hat hair and the one where he's sideways. You can totally tell that he shoved the hat down the back of his jeans. His butt isn't that big and it doesn't stick out that far!

chicken in a bisket said...

"That could get awkward."

That would be fucking hilarious if you took the wrong Cheez-Its person home. LOL!

Special K said...

The shoe shopping was done the same time, because you can see the running store bag in his REI bag. The trip to Whole Foods looks like a different trip. He might have gone out early or later and just grabbed a different hat going out the door. I have different hats (Go Sox!)that I grab and go on the same bad hair day. Or is he back to his old ways of wearing his favs a couple days in a row?

Hat in the Pants? I don't see a dark shadow under his t-shirt. I think it would be a little hard to stuff a hat like that in his pants. I don't see his sunglasses either, so I think the hat and the glasses are with his bag from the running store.

As for the more prominent glutomus maximus - maybe that's why all the yoga - and something for the goose gander? ; )

Wicked said...

That would be fucking hilarious if you took the wrong Cheez-Its person home. LOL!

I just hope the International Cheez-It convention is not in DC this coming weekend. But if it is, me and PG are definitely GOING!

I will have my Cheez It sign with the hitchhiker thumb and my camera. I'm pretty inexperienced with that camera, tho, Clarity, so bear with me. Can I take my picture & then PhotoShop a big black fuzzy dot over my face??? lol
Alter my voice so that it looks & sounds like I'm a secret witness.

Special, you cracked me up on the gluteus max. comment. LOL! Has he maybe been working on doing the ol' squats & lunges? I'm telling ya, squats & lunges will take care of that lil' problem area.

And the different hats? Heck, my dad has an assortment of hats and got another friend who has a slew of them. Different colors and logos for different occasions. I need to take a look, I guess. I'm sure you guys aren't referring to regular ballcaps, but those Paper Chase Prof. Kingsfield fedoras.

Cute pictures. Love the hathair. LOL! And I love the elevated grocery bag carry. Working those triceps. He must've wanted to hide his face. Hmmmm...planning a special coming home dinner perhaps, are we????
Some of those in the shoe store pictures are a little disturbing, but who knows. Maybe he's having trouble getting ahold of a salesclerk to pull a pair his size.

I love those tennis shoes he's got on. I can't tell what brand those are.

Hey Tom! Glad to hear you are having a great time! Be sure & keep that sunblock on. You know, you're closer to the equator down there & the sun is definitely stronger.

Got my suitcase & will gradually start setting things aside that need to go in. I will have my laptop so as to send a D.C. greeting to you all. Will also need to start checking out the 10-day forecast on Weather.com so I know what kind of clothes to take. This is pretty darn exciting. Special, I told Wicked that I would need to check out OMG Central. You know, how you saw my station, "where it all happens"? LOL.

Well, time to check a few other things & then off to bed. My brother is coming up again for a couple days tomorrow after he gets off work so headed over to the hacienda again tomorrow.

Have a great evening & sweet dreams to everyone.

Jersey Tom the Red Lobster will wear some sunscreen today. Another game today in beautiful Clearwater. Phils vs. Houston Astros.

I still cant believe Villanova is in The Final Four. Its Villanova vs. North Carolina in the Semifinals on Sat. 2 games from a Nat'l Championship.

I got to watch The Amazing Race last night for a few minutes. I wanted to check out Jake's friend Mike and his Dad. Apparently they are still in the game. Not sure who was eliminated last night. It is nice to see Jake off his leash and out with friends.
