Proof (ing) = The New Math

Most times, editing means subtraction, but in Gyllenmath it means addition and division.
Check it out:

Original Version

"Jake Gyllenhaal, enjoying a late lunch with a guy pal on the patio at Gjelina restaurant on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, Calif. The actor sipped water with lime during his quiet meal of thin-crust pizza. "It seemed like a really relaxed lunch," says an observer, noting that even ultra-trendy patrons of the hip local spot were rubbernecking for a peek at the actor. "They lingered for a while."
-- People

Revised Version
Jake Gyllenhaal, enjoying a late lunch with a guy pal on the patio at Gjelina restaurant on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, Calif. The actor sipped water with lime during a quiet lunch of thin-crust pizza which the table split. "It seemed like a really relaxed lunch," says an observer, noting that even ultra-trendy patrons of the hip local spot were rubbernecking for a peek at the actor. "They lingered for a while." -- People

Now what's math class without a word problem.

People writes two blurbs about two pals having one late lunch on Gjelina's patio on Abbot Kinney Blvd in Venice which 3.43 miles from Ocean Drive in Santa Monica . If one sipped water with lime and both lingered, what do the four new words mean?

Extra Credit:

Jake is driving traveling at 39 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone. He is followed by 5 paparazzi traveling at 37 miles per hour. Jake accelerates to 43 miles an hour and flags down a police officer 3.5 seconds ahead of the paparazzi. How many people where in the car?

(Please don't mock or throw things if the actual mathematics don't work, I was a liberal arts major for a reason people. I was breaking out in a cold sweat just trying to make up "made up word problems.")

More Notes from a Small World
Something about Gjelina : Many diners mention and compare the restaurant to Pizzeria Mozza. Who likes Mozza and hangs in Santa Monica?

Let me just address a couple of things, and then I'm done with this, unless someone wants to persist. It's outrageous to me that someone would defend their negative comments, if they only meant well. But we all know differently.

1. Based on visual facial and hair characteristics, the person questioned the POSSIBILITY (not judged, there is a difference) of the PR person coming from a religious and cultural background of anti-homosexuality and applying the bias to Jake. Ever heard of profiling? Like it or not people can and do have cultural-based bias, however it is a clue, not a definite. The person brought it up as a possible origin to Jake's diehard bearding. True it might not be polite discussion based on one person's pic but look at all the Sunday Spotlights that have focussed on religious or cultural differences on gay issues, business and PR is no exception. This person did not state that it was only a possibility, if they had, I would have not made my comments. Just because someone's culture is a certain way, doesn't mean that each and every person believes it, and it's not a given that they bring it to their working life. As far as religious bias, they should also mention Roman Catholicism, the Mormon Church, etc. don't you think?

^^^Btw, theoretically, if it was true that the PR person is prejudiced against gays, who would you call a bigot, the person who brought up the possibility of cultural bias or the person who hates gays?

We can't know this, but if the person truly hated gays, yes, they would be a bigot. Sometimes, they can be victims of their society's teachings, like us.

2. Native American comment? A comment from a virtual Jake saying
he wondered why he was finding (Atticus's) buried bones in his yard, if his yard was part of the dinosaur park in LA (can't remember the name) or if his house was on top of an Indian Sacred burial ground? That's bigoted? "Sacred Indian burial ground" is a bigoted phrase?

This is just ignorance. You don't realize the struggle that Native Americans have gone through to get respect from the dominating culture, and to maintain their sacred lands, from "museum curators" as well as those who just want it for their own greed. It came off as an offhanded, ignorant remark, in one who doesn't know the history of the subject. Minority groups who have known oppression and discrimination should have sensitivity to others who have. BTW, I didn't like the "bone garden" cemetery comment either - creepy. Was that you as well?

3. Someone tells an anecdote how their gf, who is Asian, wears socks with sandals and the gf says only Asians can wear it like that and look good? That's bigoted?

They didn't say their Asian gf only, they said all people in this category. Again, if they had phrased it like you did, I wouldn't have commented. Maybe this person needs to take a writing and communications cours?

In the 3 comments/events above there was no anger, meanness or name-calling.

Often times, there isn't. It's pure not knowing and ignorance. The person sometimes just doesn't no any better.

Incidentally, I wasn't the one who made the comments to m. She's entitled to read or go to sites as she pleases. PG, I love your comments usually, but do you really want to tell other people how to think or ridicule something they take seriously, and go to WFT2and tell people what to think as well?

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz said...

It means that the pizza was shared, why would PR approved People add it on only they know.

IHJ says that Jake was pulled over, he didn't flag down the cops to complain about the paps.

People magazine said...

Huh? = Why on Earth did PR / People magazine change the sentence?

Florida Tom said...

The only reason why I think that the change would be made in that sentence was that People wanted it to sound like there were more people at that table than just Jake and a guy friend and the whole table shared the pizza. The only problem is that they didnt complete the job. They didnt change the beginning of the paragraph where it sounded that jake was with one guy pal not a group. Or they that stupid or am I missing something.

Plus now I am confused do we know if Jake flagged down the cop or was pulled over by the cop? My guess was that he was speeding trying to avoid the paps and the cops nailed him. This certainly made things worse the paps still got their shots. Cmon Jakey you should know better..

lol said...

^^This person may sound aw shucks, I didn't know innocent when you first read their comments, but if you read carefully, they are hitting the typical racial stereotypes and grievances squarely on the jaw. On second thought PG, you may be right about whoever it is being bored, unhappy and having no life, needing to get petty enjoyment from causing trouble.

I agree about HW's weight discrimination sin tho - I don't agree that someone can always do something about their size, as someone mentioned. They shouldn't have to do something about it. It's a predjudice. Some people are just never going to be a size 2, but still healthy and attractive, and that's ok. Some people are overweight and still healthy and attractive. So why do they have to change? Just because HW is selling fantasy?

And the car - all I meant was there was more than 1 person in the car.

Thanks, Seaweed! Isn't this a great, happy song? It's a little all kinds of corny, but we all need some corny in our life, especially after a crazy day like yesterday. I had to get on here so I could hear it.

Smiley, you may want to consider about registering your name?? And I'm talking to original Smiley, btw.

And double Smiley, I'm not even going there today. I am so finished with that entire subject, it's been shredded and taken out to the big Recycle bin in my head. I'm feeling good about my job, my friends, my life, and thankful I still have my dad at this point in his illness. I'm not wasting my energy & time discussing something that is pointless. It's pointless because it's like talking to brick walls; no matter how I put it or what I say, a bitter/insulting comment is going to come back at me and frankly, anyone like that can just talk to the hand.

If you want to discuss anything else, something more positive, I'll be glad to talk. I have no beef with you; let bygones be bygones if there are any injured feelings. At least I don't think I do. It's hard to tell when on WFT2 only Anony's are used but over here a name needs to be used. So I'm not going to blame myself at all for feeling mistrusting of speaking too soon on that because I think I have justified cause.

Florida Tom said...

Pr Girl. Some folks dont like it when things are going well and we have good things to talk about here. That is pretty clear. None of that crap matters. I like it when other people get nervous when it comes to J and A. I just hope we keep our business here and let those others look like idiot.

Seaweed we should exchange email addresses. Us old guys should stick together:-) I will forward mine to the site and Spesh or Wicked can give it to you if you email them. If you want of course.

SO PrairieGirl I wish you "JOYEUX ANNIVERSAIRE" with late ( excuse me for having missed you yesterday)
Hope you were happy with your family and friends , it's only what matter, hope a tone of presents waited for you and above all hope the cake was good!!!!

Very strange about the changed copy, but I would think if there were other people there it would have been mentioned. Maybe they wanted to convey the idea he wasn't the only one eating, because when you read that one sentence it sounds like he was alone.

You will be hearing a lot more it.Really - I loved Red, Hot & Blue immensely, I still play songs from it. I'll definitely have to check this one out. I missed the song yesterday.

To be fair about the convo yesterday, I think the person may have been, by extension, defending everyone's rights. How is that a bad thing?

Personally, I don't feel the entire world revolves around J&A, and what they are doing. A person might have a legitimate gripe, and the rule here is, use a name - doesn't say it has to be a regular one. To me, J&A is secondary; I now come here because I like the discussions and music. I couldn't imagine now missing a bowl of Special K's topics topped off with Wicked's music every morning. I still want to follow what's going on, but it's not the main reason I come here.

Happy Birthday, PG - hope you had a great day in spite of the "taxing" discussion. Another great topic today, I was never a numbers whiz either. :)

**The actor sipped water with lime during a quiet lunch of thin-crust pizza which the table split.**

Options:

implies a level of casualness and intimacy. Sharing food means they have the same tastes. (although if they really wanted to imply straight buddies wouldn't they have added "beer")

4 more words to give details, gives the reader a visual of 1 table, 2 guys and 1 big pizza on top.

"the table split" ~ the pizza was so heavy the table broke in half

"the table split" could refer to paying too, it was double-dutch not a date

**Jake is driving traveling at 39 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone. He is followed by 5 paparazzi traveling at 37 miles per hour. Jake accelerates to 43 miles an hour and flags down a police officer 3.5 seconds ahead of the paparazzi. How many people where in the car?**

1 who was illegally texting.

2 who were trying out Toyota ad slogans:

"Get the Feeling"
"I Love What You Do For Me"
“What You Want Is What You Need”

(Notice how the cop is like "I don't want to know" "I see nothing" with his waving hand and avoidance of looking in the car or directly at Jake, lol)

Personal Notes:

Yuck, water with LIME. Ugh.

Good to know Jake can enjoy a relaxing meal without being stared at or talked at by his companion or be on a timeclock.

Does make me wonder what strategy if any, PR is trying to pull off with this one (a pull back from Reeke/bearding or getting feet wet with a "I can be buddies with a guy" scenario?)

Also "double dutch" will probably get me a "you're racist and a bigot and you should know the history behind the saying (blah blah)" comment. Gah, so sue me.

:) :) said...

Nope, can't come up with anything for that. Except maybe jump ropers. ;)

Special K said...

There are not your typical pizza joint in case anyone is wondering. These are gourmet pizzas, not the big kind of pies. These are wood fired oven handcrafted pizza.

So those four more words make me think "causalness and intimacy" too Lane.

Here is a description from LA Times about Gjelina

The menu at Gjelina on Abbot Kinney exhorts diners to "eat local." And you can do so most reliably by feasting on the rustic vegetable dishes chef Travis Lett turns out in a wood-fired oven. He does some terrific pizzas there too, but I find myself lusting after his baby beets and their greens drizzled in walnut oil and nestled against dollops of milky sheep's milk ricotta. Roasted eggplant and peppers in agrodolce (sweet and sour) -- cooked with raisins, a pinch of sugar and a splash of vinegar work a kind of magic too. And pairing the humble sunchoke with a vibrant salsa verde or artichokes with gremolata and Parmesan, well, that's just plain soulful.

It sounds like a Jake kind of place. And from the link in the post, somewhere that Austin would like too.

I only have a minute. Spent my lunch hr getting gas & making the ol' Wally World run. We needed more chips for leftover dip from Snack Day yesterday.

I have got to tell you, this morning from the minute I stepped out my door to leave, one of the most gorgeous sunrises was taking place and I kept it in sight all the way to work, even in my rearview mirror. It was pink & orange and looked like it just filled the entire east side. It was absolutely incredible. Then when I got to work, you could just barely see the top of the sun, which was orange/yellow and it was mesmerizing. When I passed the "fake" lake, all the colors were reflected in it and it was jawdropping, I'm telling you.

Not sure what is so fabulous about M's comment. Basically she is saying she is friend and supportive of gay people because she finds male on male arousing? I know i`m late, but hope you had a wonderful birthday, pg. Always love your comments. Like fresh air:)
I liked m`s comment. Think it`s quite common to feel this way about man/man.
I do too in a sexual way, but that`s just a small part why i find this theme interesting.
I, like m and everyone else here, i suggest, support gay rights because we want people to be free to be with the one they love.
I remember when the guy/guy-facination started for me. I was twelve years old and there was two very polite, nice and good-looking guys in my class who were best-friends. They were very popular with the girls, but looking at them while we were watching a movie in our class-room, as we did from time to time, melted my heart.
They sat on eachother`s lap, just quietly holding around eachother and watch. They had a really strong friendship and always supported eachother.
I admired them so much for showing they loved eachother very much, even though they were two straight guys. Not as common as with two best-friends who were girls.
I would also have loved BBM if the story was ending with ennis crying, losing his best-fiend, not a lover.
I love when men can show eachother love, best-friends, brothers or lovers. Guess i wasn`t used to see that much while growing up.

Hi NG!!! So wonderful to see you! I know it probably has to be hard for you to get on here maybe as often as you'd like because of the time difference & all, so it's extra special when you, ag, London, & Elinor get on here (forgive me if I leave someone out. I know someone else is in England, but I can't remember who. Remind me, ok? flf, is it you who lives there? Who is it that lives over there, too & I forgot, lol)

I always get all derailed when I talk on here. That was a lovely comment, ng. You phrased how it makes you feel so eloquently. I, on the other hand can't explain why I find it arousing, lol. I just do, can't help it. It's kind of unexplainable. I didn't seek it out, it just kind of hits me that way, lol. I don't mind at all! Girls can have such strong bonds and guys, too. It's great, I think.

My poor lil' buddy @ work. She decided to start seeing my primary care physician & she went there Mon. night. I saw her today down on the dock and she said she had something bad to tell me. Well, I got all worried, like 'oh no, what's going on? What'd they find out, something bad?'
And as soon as we could talk, she said that the doctor called her last night and said they discovered that her thyroid was way low or something like that. And she needed to immediately get on a medicine that she'd probably have to take the rest of her life. Poor thing - she looked so distressed. I said 'Oh, no, it's okay. I have a friend who has the same thing. (I think it's called hyperthyroidism) and she's been displaying classic symptoms.
Weight gain, real sluggishness, real dry skin. I had to reassure her that it's more common a condition than you'd think and it's not life threatening as long as you take your medicine. I told her she'd be okay - sometimes she's so innocent & unaware of things.
Glad they found it, tho.

You know, Tom, that does kind of look like Jake in that picture.

Special, I meant to tell you that yesterday's post was sooo funny. I really enjoyed it. I love makebelieve conversations. They're fun to do. lol, it was a very clever one.

Tom, I identify with your annoyance. m knows how we feel about her; this is just all such utter nonsense. Apparently, someone has way too much time on their hands trying to think of a way to vent so they decide to personally attack.

Hey good morning, Wicked!! Good morning to Potter & Tink, as well; Tink, who I know that even at this hour, is barking her good morning to everyone, lol, wide awake as if she'd been up for 7 hours already, probably with that orange/black rope pull in her mouth, too.

Wicked I don't know if it should be where everyone has to have an ID. I don't know if it would solve the problem. No offense to you and Special but I think you two are confusing censorship with maintaining respect. When opinions of issues differ, fine, it's great that you don't censor or delete comments, unlike other sites. However when a comment does not contain an opinion or view of a topic and is only there to insult other posters, then yes, it's time to censor and delete them. Those kind of posts have no value, they are inhibiting, they intimidate others who otherwise would post their views but are afraid to get insulted and called out by trolls, and it negatively affects the overall tone of the blog. I know you will both disagree, saying you will continue to not delete posts but I really think you ought to reconsider.

Ever heard of profiling?I was remiss in not adressing this point yesterday. My apologies!

Yes, I have heard of profiling. And those who use it will be the first to tell you that it is not infallible, it is just one tool in an arsenal. They will tell you that there are exceptions to every rule. Further, this woman in the picture is not a suspect in anything is she? The only thing she may be guilty of is having an unruly hairstyle. Christianity's bloody past puts it in the same category as the Islamic fundamentalists in my opinion, if you want to profile. The only reason it doesn't happen today is that modern society won't allow it, and in most cases has separation of church and state for this very reason.

Noone gets a free pass in my book to insult others. That's what equality is all about. Not special treatment, equal treatment.

and another thing . . . said...

Profiling has been challenged in the courts many times as unconstitutional also. So you can see, civil rights is an issue at least I take very seriously, and one reason why I am here. I don't like to see it swept under a rug, or being applied to only one group.

Just to let you know, I will no longer be posting here. I don't like the changes I've seen here, it's not the same place anymore. Time for me to find a different blog.

NETB - I don't want to see you go.

I think the current tone has gotten more focused on other creating issues amongst one another.

One thing about OMG is about respecting each other.

And everyone having a voice.

For those who come here to start trouble because you are bored or annoyed or just wanting to be a spoiler, we wish that you go on to find another place to put that energy not here.

It may mean what OMG needs to look at what needs to happen so we can restore the balance of that.

To be honest, it's just tiresome now. People follow each other like a bunch of lemmings, everyone is either a troll, a fangirl (wtf?), and you really can't state your views. Those who appear to be troublemakers are defended, and those whose posts just by the text alone only trying to make a point are treated dismissively. And I don't think people should be coerced into registering for a name if they don't want to - some people may just want to use a different name from time to time. I personally don't like the social dynamics of groupthink, which is why I don't use this name regularly.

And you know what? I'm not so sure about what's going on with Jake now, maybe he is with Reese. It's his life, not my business. But I'm not going to shake my head up and down like a Bobblehead doll and agree if I don't, or follow you all off a cliff like a lemming, nor be labeled one of many names. I do like our discussions and music, and Special is a very sweet and fair woman. Keeps her cool, I don't know how she does it, truly. Heresy, I know, but I don't know about a BT either.

Thanks for letting me vent.

You are free to think whatever you like.

We are free to think you are wrong - it has nothing to do with lemmings or following others.
