Out Spotlight LXXXIX

Today's Outspotlight is Sharon Kowalski and Karen Thompson.

This couple never considered themselves to be part of an extended lesbian community. It was from a tragic accident they found themselves not only a part of the lesbian community, but a voice for importance of durable power of attorney forms for homosexual couples and a part of the gay rights movement.

First meeting in 1976 at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota when Sharon Kowalski enrolled in two physical education classes that Karen Thompson taught there. A year later, they worked together coaching track. Neither woman had previously identified as a lesbian, and their romantic involvement developed slowly over time.

By 1983, they had been together for four years and had commitment ceremony, with no one even their family knowing of their relationship. That was until a devastating automobile accident changed their lives forever and brought them out of the closet.

On November 3, of that year a drunk driver hit the car in which Kowalski was driving with her niece. Her niece was killed, and Sharon was left first comatose, then severely disabled from a head injury. She was left with the intellectual capability of a 4-6 yr old, later testing would show.

Both Thompson and Sharon Kowalski's father, Donald, petitioned to be named Sharon Kowalski's legal guardian in March 1984. With the understanding that she would have visitation rights, Thompson agreed that Donald Kowalski would be named Sharon Kowalski's guardian. At the time Thompson went to court, she and Kowalski had been 'roommates' to anyone who had an inquiring mind. When her father, Don Kowalski, was exposed to the truth of their relationship, he broke the agreement he made with Thompson to grant her full visitation rights to see his daughter.

Thompson had never used the word 'gay' the entire time she lived with Kowalski, and now she had no choice but to do so if she were to obtain visitation rights.

The court's guardianship order, however, gave Donald complete control over visitation. That July, Donald Kowalski, Sharon's father, acquired legal guardianship of his 27-year- old daughter without even a court hearing, then moved her to a nursing home almost 200 miles from her home with Thompson. He then left orders forbidding Thompson to see her lover, even though she had been working successfully to help Sharon regain some of her lost abilities.

Though Kowalski continually typed out messages (the only way she could communicate after the accident) saying she wished to live with Thompson, her parents and the court considered her incompetent to decide her own future. In May 1988, a federal judge asked specialists to conduct a study of Sharon to determine whether she had sufficient mental capacity to accurately express her wishes in regard to visitation. The court found that she was capable of understanding and communicating her wishes. All those messages she had been typing out about going home with Karen were here real wishes all those years in the care facility was what she had wanted.

Pushed out of the closet and into the public eye, Thompson found that it was support from the lesbian, gay, and disabled communities that helped the couple to win their battle to reunite. Determined that her lover would not be left alone and poorly cared for in an institution, Thompson began the lengthy battle to bring Sharon home. The case cost over $300,000 in legal fees, which she raised by speaking around the country at gay pride rallies and other events, not only to tell her own story, raised awareness about the need for legal protection for gay and lesbian relationships.

In February, 1989, Karen Thompson was finally able to visit her lover for two weekends every month. She continued to fight for guardianship of Sharon, even though the courts tried to award guardianship to a supposed "neutral third party" with close ties to Sharon's parents. A case that began on July 25, 1985, handed down its final decision Dec. 17, 1991 with Kowalski and Thompson finally won their case when the court allowed Karen to bring Sharon home.

Not only the GLBT community, but disabled rights advocates as well, rose up in support of Thompson and Kowalski, rallying to slogans like "Free Sharon Kowalski" and "Bring Sharon Home." Along with offering moral support and financial contributions, many also took Thompson's advice to draw up durable powers of attorney for health care and living wills, to protect them should the time come when they were unable to speak for themselves.

Karen Thompson and Sharon Kowalski, never thought of themselves as part of the lesbian community, but became pioneers for the GLBT community. They brought into sharp focus an issue that many able-bodied gay men and lesbians had never considered before the importance of giving legal status to their chosen families. Sharon Kowalski and Karen Thompson's persistence in pursuing their case forced both the courts and American society in general to consider an alternative definition of family.

The gay community taught Thompson how to cope with her identity, while Kowalski taught Thompson about living with a disability, Thompson said. But together, they give back by being advocates within the community that supported them.

They story and struggle helped the courts addresses and reassess what is a family. And this family has grown with the addition of Patty Bresser, Kowalski's current girlfriend. It was because of Patty that Karen could find comfort during her forced period of separation from Sharon. "I didn't think I was going to survive. ... There were times that I cried myself to sleep one time too many and just didn't care if I ever woke up," Thompson said.

A film, Lifetime Commitment: A Portrait of Karen Thompson, a play, and several books have been written about the case and its place in the overall gay rights movement. .

Good morning!
Looks like a wonderful Out Spotlight today; I will read it tonight when I get home. It's been a late morning, although I did get up @ 5 am so I could go walk at my park again before I had to leave for my old church and ushering duties. We just got word that my niece & nephew are headed up again this way as in TODAY!! Holy cow. So, my next couple of days will be sucked up into their visit, lol.
It was nice knowing you guys, lol.

Aw, it's just that when they come up, my whole life just disappears and becomes all enveloped in them,
lol.

I guess this is why I am havin some serious issues with believing in BT now. When you have kids, your life is not your own anymore. I'm serious - it isn't. And Jake and Austin are away from home in the company of others just waaaaay too much for me to seriously consider that they have a kid or kids.

My park was sooo beautiful this morning. I was the only one, I mean the only one out there and since it was in the mid 50's, there was a fog hanging over the ground in a big cloud. It was gorgeous. Yesterday, I came across a raccoon!! Yes, a raccoon. This morning, 3 herons on the sidewalk. When they poop on the sidewalk, they make a huge mess. I mean, a huge one.

London, thanks for the info on Take That. Oh, I loved them on the Concert for Diana. And their song videos are good, too. That one song of theirs, "Want You Back", is good, too. I really like it. I have the one cd of theirs that has "Patience" on it. It's really good. I have one song by Robbie, and I think it's called "Rock DJ". That video is a little crazy, lol. That guy was impressed with himself, wasn't he, lol?

Well, it's a short time on the ol' blogging thread today. I need to work on my new laptop and other stuff.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday and I'm rooting for Tommy Watson today for the British Open win!!!

A little side note: This shows how bad my geography is. I didn't know that Scotland was in Great Britain. I thought Great Britain was just another term for London or England. I thought they all were the same place. We were standing around before church discussing the British Open and this guy said how the British Open was in Scotland this year and I said I didn't know they moved it around. I thought it was always in Great Britain. And he said, "Well, Scotland Is in Great Britain!" oh.

lol. Heck, I didn't know. I'm sorry, Meg, honest, I had no idea. Anyway, that's pretty cool. I thought Scotland was a country all by itself. Isn't it? So that makes Great Britain a continent? I guess I need to go to Wiki for this.

Alright, alright, calm yourselves down. Hey, at least I admit when I'm a duncehead! lol.

I have not thought about Sharon K. In years. Great spotlight as always.

This story illustrates something that does not get talked about much, people who do not think they have to worry about rights until someone comes along and tris to take away their own. It is also another example of why it is so important to be out and be part of a community.

Beautiful day here too, my gf even joined me (gasp) in a morning walk and we just had breakfast in a cafe along the Hudson River.

I very much like this song with this post. I actually met Sharon and Karen at a DC Gay Pride years ago.

Just wanted to say a few things about the recent comments made about me and Spesh @ WFT2-

PG was absolutely right to bring those comments over here and let us know. If someone was talking about you, wouldn't you want know?

Clearly the person who made these comments is a troll, and was recognized as such @ WFT2. Folks over there didn't fall for it for a minute. Why would someone make comments about people from Blog A on Blog B? To cause trouble, that's why. Folks at WFT2 are not dumb and called it out immediately.

This incident clearly shows that both blogs do not want trouble with each other, and are happy to coexist despite attempts by trolls to start trouble between them. I, for one, am glad people feel this way.

My goodness, what a moving story. Thanks for sharing this one.

Someone on WT2 found this by a guy named Jim Sterling. Not sure who he is but some kind of movie reviewer. Pretty funny and dead on unfortunately. "Actor Jake GysahlGreens seems to look perpetually doe-eyed and confused in every Prince of Persia shot I've seen. Still, here he is looking much more like the titular Prince than ever before, even if his face does resemble that of a child who just dropped his ice cream on a cat, and is watching the cat run away with it on its back.

This is the first official picture from Jerry Bruckheimer's take on The Sands of Time. The picture is apparently available in Entertainment Weekly with much better quality, so if you're fixing to masturbate over this, you can do it to that one.

"I'm tired of taking myself so seriously," says GysahlGreens. "It's nice when a stuntman turns to you and is like, 'Actors don't normally do this.'"

He's right, of course. Proper actors don't normally appear in videogame movies.

Prairegirl, I would advice you, not to just go to Wikipedia, but to get yourself a map of the world and study it. I think you'll find it quite interesting.

I must admit it shocks me a bit, that you think Great Britain is a continent. It's an island (or several)! Europe is the continent. There are six billion people in the world, it's important to know a bit about how people live outside your country as well. Geography is part of that! Get yourself a map! Or a globe! Get informed!

Sorry to be harsh, but ignorance, even acknowledged, is just not good. But the good thing is, it can be cured, if you want to.

I was looking at some other comments made by the same fellow about POP from his own website and found this one. "After watching this new footage for the Prince of Persia movie, I am convinced that Jerry Bruckheimer is in love with Jake Gyllenhaal. Am I the only one that noticed that Jerry's face was glowing when the host asked about Jake? Broke Back Mountain: More Broke Backs starring those two is in the works for sure." Interesting comment since Ted had hinted that Jake got the role on the casting couch.

however, just so you know,

London is the capital of England;
Cardiff is the capital of Wales; and

Edinburgh, the greatest, most beautiful city in the world, (can you tell I'm biased) is the capital of Scotland.

Meg -

Beautiful beautifu pictures from Scotland. My grandmother's family was all from St. Andrews. We had cousins who would send us wonderful things growing up, and through my MomMom experienced traditional Scottish fare.

Many great friends from Glasgow through one of my past jobs. They got me hook on Charles Rennie Mackintosh who I love and have inspired bits through the house and in the jewelry box.

LOL! And unfortunately kind of true. Interesting comment about Bruckheimer too, and given that one interview and the way he talked about Jake hmmm.... and eeewwwww.

m, funny how you seem to enjoy to make and read any negative comment about Jake. What a sad sad person you seem. As for prairiegirl, unbeleavable!. Girl I understand you live middle of nowhere, still. Take Obama's word, go back to school gal. And I mean, elementary.

kdk, I pass on whatever I read that I find interesting or significant. I rely on others at wft2 and omg to keep me informed when they read or hear something, and feel a responsibility to share whatever I come across, be it good or bad. Readers are free to then form their own opinions about the information.

geography & kdk, ask me if I care one iota what you think, alright? Why don't you give me some facts about every city in my state where I live? Some algebra equations? How about some chemistry formulas?

Let me tell you something. I admitted I knew nothing about geography. I'm loved by the most and only important Being despite not knowing about England, UK, Scotland, Britain, etc, alright? I still managed to graduate summa cum laude from a 4-year school. No, no Masters, but hey. That deficit to my portfolio as well isn't going to matter to He who is giving the final approval.

Glad I gave you a chance to visit OMG again. You were just waiting, weren't you? Welcome!! Please come sit a spell and share some things about yourself. I want to give you a big ol' hug. I still love you anyway.

Man, I tell you what. There are just some really unhappy people in this world and I feel so sorry for them. How terrible to go through life trying to make someone feel smaller than themselves. And how sad that it just doesn't accomplish what they intended.

Well, let me tell you one more thing. Despite my not knowing these vitally, life-depending geographical facts, I somehow made it home tonight and I somehow still managed to get some fantastic loving from my niece, my nephew, my brother, my sister in law, my mom, my dad, my camping friend who I talked to on the phone today, and alot of people at my old Kansas City church where I ushered today. Somehow, they all managed to see past my ignorance and seemed to accept me for who I was and what I did know, not for what I didn't.

You may not know my homestate's State Bird or State Song or the name of the county where I live (vital information if I ever knew of any), but I'll still like you. And please come back again when you can spend some more time with us.

Hey m! Looks like it's just you and me tonight.

How sad. Just pathetically sad the negative energy wasted on ridiculous comments such as those made today by a chosen few.

Somebody (s - someones? some people? English major!! Where are you? Help out an old ignorant, carmat here) is sure bothered. Distressed. Upset. Worried. Threatened? Something. They are trying their darndest to stir up trouble.

Well, they're barking up the wrong tree. I think I need to roll out the heavy artillary Welcome Wagon Gift Basket for KDK and Geography.
Let's see....Johnny, tell KDK & Geography what they've won tonight!

Alright, pg, well, first of all, they've won,

...an 8 x 10, glossy, frameable, color photo of OMG Regulars!!! Yes, there they are...There they are all seated around the chairs inside a Starbucks, holding their frappaccinos & lattes. As you can see, there's Special, Wicked, m, JerseyTom, Meg, LondonTB, Kacie, Destiny, ag, HopefulTB, Clarity, Stubborn, Seaweed, Elinor, NG, ECF, and their favorite Scholar, that ol' nemesis "pg"! This photo, ladies & gentleman, is worth a cool $1,000 and comes with a plexiglass, spit-proof frame. Alright!!!

...Next, we have another 8 x 10 glossy! Of Jake Gyllenhaal with his long-time love, Austin Nichols! Here they are in all their Spandex-d glory, waving and saluting their faithful followers. This photo? Worth a cool $5 K. It comes with a black velvet matte and silver frame.

...And last but not least, we have some lovely parting gifts should they choose not to stay a spell. We have 25 hugs, 25 signed yearbooks, a beautiful white icing cake, 25 pecks on the cheek (heck, make that 50 - one on each cheek), and a set of 2009 Britannica Encyclopedias for both of them!!
