For a while Hollywood had cut back on showing smoking on the big screen, but it is slowly making a comeback, seeing more movies that have a character who smoke. You don't really think about it, because Jake was so careful of not being seen smoking that you don't realize how many of his roles smoked.
The number of times you see Jake smoking off screen are rare.
The word was a while back that Jake was trying to quit. Right around the time tiny people showed up and not a dancer in the bunch.
Reminder look for Jake on Sesame Street on PBS tomorrow (check local listing for times) he is reported to be seen hanging out with a purple octopus.

I've read that people who smoke are far more likely to smoke in their movies. Now in the case of BBM it was a reflection of the time and the character, and I think it was the right call. But in some of his other movies it seemed unnecessary, and the scenes in Rendition and the last scene of Jarhead always struck me as gratuitious.
No way of knowing whether Jake still smokes. He may have quit, or he may have just decided it is not in keeping with his "new" image of suburban stepdad.
And even if there are not a lot of pap pictures of him in the past, I can recall plenty of sightings of him standing outside restaurants smoking, etc. That never happens anymore either.
In recent interviews with Maggie there was one in which she said she'd quit, and another one in which the writer described her smoking. Sounded like the image she wanted to give off clashing with the reality. Wouldn't surprise me if the same was true of Jake.
Well I think it makes sense for Tommy in Brothers to be a smoker, after serving time in prison.
And I think the same thing about BBM Destiny.
Holden and Donnie were about rebellion/outsiders and smoking can be a part of that. And Highway, seems like he was following what everyone did to fit in.
Rendition clearly its a joint or hash, but in Morocco that wouldn't be uncommon. In Brothers Tommy and Grace share a smoke.
For Jake being such a foodie, I would think he wouldn't want to smoke because it affects taste, but then again it amazes me how many chefs smoke and you'd think how protective they would be of the palate. Also for all the exercise Jake does it's ironic. But it's a hard habit to break. But I thought I remember reading that he was trying to quit around the time Maggie was pregnant. Does anyone remember that?
Also I think what Ted is saying that Reese wants the relationship to continue because she see the benefits from it. But it sounds like that's not going to happen, which means Jake doesn't.
I always find that funny about foodies too Special.
I don't recall any interviews from Jake talking about quitting, just speculation from fans, but I could be wrong about that.
Some of the other roles I agree it is not out of synch given the character, but I do think a non-smoker is less likely to make smoking a part of their character, even if it might fit the situation.
For example, I can't recall ever seeing Clooney smoke; I don't even recall him doing it in Thank You and Good Night, when every other character was smoking like a chimney.
I didn't realize there were so many roles where he did smoke.
If he doesn't still smoke, it would really have to be hard to stay on the wagon having done it for so many roles.
I don't know how hard it is to stop because I've never smoked, but we've had enough people in our office over the years that I have seen how hard it is to even try and stop. One of the reasons I'm glad I never even started. My big buddy in the next cube, he smokes. My little buddy, she used to smoke and now she's been hooked on that gum for years, lol. Big Boss, she used to smoke and has quit several times. She's on the wagon now and has been for awhile. But she had been on the wagon for years & years, then there was a real stressful period in her life and man, she took right up again.
Just like any habit we can have; it's so hard to restrain when we go through a bad time.
Where am I going with this little speech? I have no idea. lol.

have to agree with you about ted doesn`t think reeke is over,destiny, though there is certain he hopes so. he`s hoped for many things for jake the last years that hasn`t come true, so i understand he`s sceptic.
seems to me he means, like special said, reese wants more but jake wants out.

jake just seems to me, as a quite week person. like someone who needs a leader, someone to claim to.
if he really wants out, i doubt he has the strength to do so if the people who`s responsible for his career don`t agree. and let`s face it. he`s career is very important to him. maybe he just can`t decide how much.
i feel much more sorry for reese because she seems to have made that decision a long time ago...
Hey ng! He strikes me as very influenced, very intimidated. I can identify with it because I can be weak myself. I'm not the strongest person in the world. But gee whiz.
I would like to think that when it comes to a career and personal life, that I do put my foot down and not compromise my integrity or beliefs. It takes guts to stand up to someone.
I watched a former whse superviser, a very good guy, lose his job after alot of years at the plant. He got railroaded out, one of the reasons being because he had the courage to stand up to the BB. He talked back and didn't always nod his head up & down.
It takes courage to go against the grain and do what you feel is right. Or best for you. Or do something risky.
Oh, and ng? lol. I never feel sorry for her. Not in a million years. You can have my share.

Jake seems like a pleaser and I think he wants to please people. Also think that his relationship with his mother influences his relationship with Ev who seems to be the "work mom" figure in his life.

i use AOL for my email. yesterday as i was checking it, i scrolled down to see the entertainment news and there was a link to the article about Reess's upcoming Bling-filled Christmas. Jake is going to pop the question (shhhh... it's a surprise) and she's SOOOO excited.
The article - obviously not a deep look into their past - doesn't mention all the previous question popping that did not thrill her quite so much, nor did it say what had changed from all the press last week about how he'd been pestering her to settle down while she just wasn't in the mood for that. Maybe this article is followign along with the other line of thought that has mysteriously appeared just in the last couple of days: that she is the one who wants to settle and he's just not quite ready because he's just got so many places to go and things to do that he can't be bothered with shackling himself to one woman. Even tho he's only ever been seen with 2 women regularly for his entire life. Maybe he's READY to start sewing some oats and playing the field. He is almost 30, after all. If you're going to do that sort of stuff, it's best to do it while you're still kinda young and stupid...
after reading all the conflicting reports, i have to say... wtfe. if this is some lame attempt to make them see either more REAL or more INTERESTING, at least for me, it's not working. if it's a way to make the last of jake's old fans fall of the vine so that he can grow a whole new crop next year with POP, then YAYAYAY PR... it's working. at least for me.
