Take Shelter Notes

Jake might not have twitter but he could be following Austin's.Wanna see a boss movie? Go see TAKE SHELTER by Director Jeff Nichols. Opens this weekend in select cities.
- AUS10 Sept 29 2011

Last night Jake went to a screening of Take Shelter at the 57th Street Screening Room and stopped to be snapped with Shelter's star Michael Shannon.Take Shelter, written and directed by Austin, Texas filmmaker Jeff Nichols, tells the story of husband and father who has apocalyptic visions and prepares to his family shelter from what he has seen. He begins to question whether he's sheltering them from a coming storm, or from himself.

Star Michael Shannon, who makes his home in Brooklyn, is currently seen on the HBO Emmy award winning show Boardwalk Empire as the complex treasury agent Nelson Van Alden.

This is the not the first time there has been a connection between Austin's tweets and Jake.

Remember Bear? Three months after Austin tweeted about Bear Grylls, Jake talked about Bear to David Letterman.

And we know where that got Jake.

Gimme Shelter is definitely in my top 10 all-time favorite songs.

Oh my said...

And Marty Scorsese just had a minor coronary.

Oh my....

So sorry I transposed Boardwalk Empire.

Hopefully I didn't kill Scorsese. I love his movies. I think I might have to worry more about exec producer Mark Wahlburger since he's closer to my neighborhood.

So glad I could make you day.

Destiny, I love this song too. And so does Marty, who's a Stones fan too.

All hail the Glimmer Twins.

Finally, you know that Oscar season is on its way when celebrities start randomly hosting parties for other celebrities to congratulate them on their fine work in Movie A or Movie B. Two nights ago Courtney Love nearly coughed on me (she covered her mouth - good manners!) at the Rampart premiere after party for Woody Harrelson as she whisked by. That's as glitzy as it gets when you are a nobody there to report on the somebodys! Last night, I ordered a drink while standing near Jake Gyllenhaal. #GlamorousMomentsAtMovieParties!

Jake was at the second event to congratulate Take Shelter's Michael Shanno who I had spoken with the night before at the Rampart party; same faces, different nights, the parties blurring together. Rampart is a naturalistic cop drama and Take Shelter, an apocalyptic psychological question mark but both films worry tremendously well over their leading man's mental health. Is there room for both Harrelson and Shannon in Oscar's Best Actor race? There's no way that superstars Brad Pitt (Moneyball) and George Clooney (The Descendants) are budging from their presumptive thrones so that leaves three vacant spots for all the other leading men to fight over. We'll know in 81 days who wins the coveted nominations for the 84th annual Oscars. Last night, at least, it appeared likely that "Michael Shannon" was already mentally scribbled on Jake's own ballot.

Speaking of significant tie-ins, having watched TDAT yesterday, I was reminded of this seemingly isolated tweet from Austin back on August 8, 2010:

The flame is not so bright to itself as to those whom it illuminates, so also the wise man. -Nietzsche
8 Aug 10 via Twitter for BlackBerry®

Now, why would Austin want to suddenly tweet an aphorism by Friedrich Nietzsche and have that excerpt be a quote about illumination? There had been no discussion of German philosophy or literature, or anything even remotely related to the topic of metaphysics.

Maybe, just maybe it was because Special had just put up the Club Lotus collaborative post, which had been based on several findings from various OMGers the day before, on August 7. The significance of the post was how well it detailed the chronology of Austin and Jake having been together long before Kirsten arrived on the scene in September, 2002. That the moment the two guys met in the auditions for TDAT that May, they couldn't keep their eyes off one another.

But, why tweet the Nietzsche quote? Well, maybe because the title of The Day After Tomorrow, comes from the foreward to Nietzche's Antichrist:

This book belongs to the very few. Perhaps none of them is even living yet. Possibly they are the readers who understand my Zarathustra: how could I confound myself with those for whom there are ears listening today? -- Only the day after tomorrow belongs to me. Some are born posthumously."

In brief, Austin was cleverly letting us know, as recently as last year, that our conclusions about him and Jake were indeed correct. Perhaps even clarifying.

omg! I didn't recognize Michael Shannon immediately; he's plays that complex crazy OCD FBI agent, and is one of my favorite actors in BoardWalk Empire.

Gone to tell me son! TY all so much.

Perusing Jake blogs makes me over the top happy. I just hope Jake's not really sad...his eyes look so huge and sad and somber...course he's not posing for fan/red carpte pics! Jake, we all love U to pieces . Hats off to Austin; his talent and hard work are finally gaining recognition. Jake, I hope, is being loved, at last, a lot.

Forgive my going on and on and on :) It's probably my pain meds: And I thank God that my medication is available. So many generic meds are in limited supply and
avalability.
Some of the Drug companies refuse to make generics Rx's because cost isn't enough that they can show a profit...arr
Please send up a prayor that my MRI will be AOK! I can't get over seeing Carmelo Anthony in the flesh today.
I nearly broke my neck looking up at him when he got out of the cab and went into the Red Rooster.

So Glad he's a NY Knick! I've shrunk to 5'51/2" from 5'7. How does Lala do it hmmmm? :lol

President Obama, had a $35,000 per plate fund raiser dinner there a month or so ago. My invite got lost in the mail :lol :lol

Anyway, seriously, I couldn't get within 30 feet of the restaurant that evening, though it's great to have a Presidential visit to my neighborhood!

Excuse my spelling errors. Is there anyway to spellcheck a post written the outside the blog page?

sweet dreams:)

I remember that "Lotus" post! I didn't know that the title of The Day After Tomorrow was based on a quote from Nietzsche? Didn't they also want to burn books and the librarian wanted to save Nietzsche's writings because he was the most important thinker of 19th Century? That's an impressive catch. How do you people recall this stuff?

I know I have gone back and forth about old Kiki, because it was noticeable how fond of each other she and Jake seemed to be (or maybe Jake was just a better actor back then), but that one post convinced me that Ms. Doable Dimples was most definitely a beard from the start. Could have been a beard with benefits, but a beard for sure.

Great catch M&M! Gold Star.

And yes Jason, there was a scene about burning Nietzsche's book.

I found out that yesterday was National Sandwich Day and it would be a shame not to post Jake's special sandwich connection.

Thinking good thought for your MRI Sass.

Interesting about all the Nietzsche stuff.

Kiki may have been a beard, but my guess is that she didn't know she was one.

I love Boardwalk Empire too Sass. Agent Van Alden's storyline has gotten definitely more interesting and complex this season. The whole show has gotten more complex.

Sending you good thoughts and prayers for your test.
