The Way to Go?

There was more news yesterday about Jake in talks for the movie The Way Way Back. The story written by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, follows a teenage boy, who over the course of an extraordinary summer, forms an unlikely friendship with the guy in charge of a local water park. That friendship gives him the strength to stand up to his bullying abusive stepdad and reconnect with his mom.

Jake's teenage days over, and being the bullying stepdad, doesn't seem like the image Jake wants at the moment. But with water park guy, Jake could have could have a chance to play it a little broader than usual and bring a quirky blend of comedy and understanding to the mentoring manager."Owen, a park worker with more charm in his pinky than ten Obamas put together. The instantly likable 20-something becomes a sort of half-friend half-parent to Duncan, and jacks him up with enough confidence to change his passive approach to the world. With Owen's encouragement, Duncan begins making friends, talking to girls, and yes, even breakdancing."

Wonder if Schlitterbahn is in the running for the part of the waterpark? Well even if it loses out to Wild Rivers, Jake could still get in some quality research time at the famous Texas waterpark.Faxon and Rash are getting great reviews for their screenplay for George Clooney's newest movie The Descandents.

For The Way Way Back, they will get the opportunity to direct their own script. There is no word on when production will begin but there is a entry over at IMDB listed as Untitled Rash/Faxon Project (2012).

The script, floating around since 2007, is said to be a dramedy, and with Faxon and Rash there has to be some comedy. The two are both part of improv and sketch comedy theater, The Groundlings.

Bostonian and Sox fan Faxon has been in big screen comedies including Beerfest, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox story, Club Dread, Zookeeper, and Slackers. Some may know him from his role as Sully in the Funny or Die parody of Mad Men, called MA Men & MA Men 2.

Rash has been on a regular on shows including The Naked Truth, Thanks and Help Me Help You. He also has had guest roles on Will & Grace, Friends and was a reoccurring character on Reno 911 & That 70's show.

Rash might be best known for his most recent role as Dean Pelton on NBC's Community.

Whether Jake signs on or not, it looks like he is again looking to his indie roots.

Here's where I got the quote about the character Owen, the water park manager.

Scriptshadow: The Way Back

The Way Back
Genre: Coming-of-Age/Comedy

Premise: A lonely teenager spends a life-changing summer at a water park with his family in 1984.

About: Yes, if the first thing that came to mind reading that premise was “Adventureland,” you’re not alone. But I'll get to the similarities later in the review. Staying true to my promise to give you more Black List scripts as we creep closer to 2010’s selections, “The Way Back” is the number 10 ranked script on the 2007 compilation.

The Way Back is Adventureland by way of a sweeter Kevin Smith mixed with a dash of Dazed and Confused, as well as a healthy dose of Faxon and Rash’s own unique voice. Duncan Ramsey is your atypical 15 year old, a loner unwillingly drafted into that unavoidable war known as your teenage years. His mother, Pam, is a bit of a lush. His stepfather, Trent, is a lot of an asshole, and his fellow teenage sister, Steph, just wants to get through the summer wearing as little clothing as possible. Just like Adventureland, The Way Back takes place in the stylistically misguided decade of the 80s, except instead of a theme park being the central location, the family is staying at…a water park? … What kind of family spends a summer at a water park? Duncan's family. That's who.

...The way Owen is crafted is a great lesson on how to build a likable character. First of all, he’s hilarious. His sharp sense of humor makes him immediately endearing. Second, he’s cool. Everybody wants to be the guy/girl who doesn’t care what anybody else thinks about him.

Jake out with Ramona and Mom.

How do we know it's Ramona? We never see her face. How do we know that scooter is hers? Hiding in plain sight indeed.

It's Ramona. It's clearly a photo op and what you have to ask is why. Because with Jake, there's an underlying reason to practically anything he does online anymore.

I find it odd that Jake isn't even smiling in any of the pictures. He's out with his niece, so why isn't he flashing the tiles? He should be the ecstatic uncle. Because #1, he is an uncle, that in itself is something to be very proud and happy about. I know I am of my own niece & nephew. #2, he keeps saying 999,999,999 times that he wants a family someday & can't wait until that day, so here he is with a child who also happens to be his niece so why isn't he smiling/glowing like he is in the Edible Schoolyard pictures? Because he should be.

You have to ask yourself that question. No getting around it, you have to. It's not the 5000 shots per frame reason and it's not that it's darn windy and blowing his hair, and it's not because his shoes are too tight or that he's got a wedgie and can't do anything about it with the camera on them.

The other question I know I have is pure nosey. Why does he need a nanny for this outing? Jake can't handle one kid? It's not like she's 2 years old and the nanny needs to be there with her backpack full of wipes, Cheerio plastic container full of Cheerios, sippy cup, change of clothes for spit-ups, or is it because in case Jake has to go to the bathroom and he can't take Ramona into the bathroom with him so the nanny is there to stay with Ramona while Uncle Jake steps into McD's and uses their bathroom?

This 2nd question has nothing to do with any cover up or conspiracy; PG just is curious why Jake apparently does not trust himself to be able to handle his niece? I thought he was totally used to kids because of his niece??? I thought he was getting experience because of his niece? But on a little scooter outing, he needs help from the nanny? Why? Is Ramona prone to big tantrums in the middle of a store or sidewalk? Is that why the nanny is there? Moral support? Advice?

LOL - is it like Family Affair when Mr. French takes Buffy & Jody to the park and he sits on the bench and visits with the other butlers/nannies? I dunno - maybe they're on their way to go sit on the park bench like Mr. French & his peers. I'm having this image of Jake sitting on the park bench with his little black walking stick with the duck's head on top, and he pulls out his big pocket watch on a chain.

"Ramona!! We must be going!! And then Jake rises and bows to the other nannies/butlers on the park benches and says he must be going.

I don't know where all of that came from, it just kind of hit me and I had to go with it.

I'm not sure who these guys (Jake, Austin & their mgmt) think they are 1) kidding and 2) doing all of this for.

If they think they're going to throw people off a scent or make people go away from sheer frustration or whatever, they are very sadly mistaken. The little hamster wheel ride can just keep on going because they're wasting a bunch of energy for nothing. For nothing. Spin away, fellas. You're not fooling anyone who is firmly entrenched in what's really going on. And if it's the casual grocery stand rag-reader this is all aimed for, it's wasted on them as well because that's not the audience you're really worried about, is it? You're really not doing it for them because they're just oblivious.

No, you're doing this to discourage and confound those who know. And well - like I said, what a waste of effort and time. Poor little Sally Brown who wasted all that time in the pumpkin patch when she could've been out with the other kids for tricks or treats.

Now with that all out of the way, I will say that Jake looks extremely handsome in the JJ pictures.

And as we are upon the 1 yr anniversary of Jaylor, at least he is not doing this photo op with a potential or new beard. I give some credit for that.

But he's still hiding a huge secret. So is there a difference between a big lie and a small lie? A medium-sized lie? A not-too-bad kind of lie? A really nasty lie? A well-it's-only-going-to-hurt-me-and-no-one-else kind of lie? Is it a super-sized lie? A Big & Tall lie? A $1 menu sized lie? A snack-sized lie? A lie with heavy cream or a lie with Splenda? Is it an epic lie? Or just an eensie, weensie, bitty lie?

At what point do the lines begin to blur and you don't know anymore what is real and what is not? Who you are and who you are serving? Who owns you? Who is in control of your life? I mean, really in control?

The big clothes switchover is going on today. Putting away Halloween & fall; gonna go ahead and get ready for the big Kahuna - Christmas.

What I can't wait to see is if we get a picture of adorable Baby Flynn in a Christmas outfit. Baby Flynn has got to be the most stylish little HW baby, hands down. I will hand it to Miranda Kerr - that little kid wears some of the cutest and nicest clothes besides being just the cutest little baby out there. I never was an Orlando fan but ever since he's been seen out with Flynn, I have to say that he looks great with that adorable baby. Maybe it's the hair? He cut it a bit but it's really wavy and tousled and all that.

Not a Nanny said...

That's his mom with them not a nanny. Could be that he's pissed because he realizes there's a pap there and doesn't want the little girl upset?

prairiegirl said...

Well, that's what I thought too at first but you just can't tell for sure. The hair color's just about right but we can't see her face so I just don't know 100%.

Either way, even if it is his mom, he can't handle Ramona by himself? My question still stands.

I don't think he's worried about the paps upsetting Ramona. Ramona has done photo ops before with her mother and the very same scooter and she's smiling to beat the band. And who can forget the photo op with Maggie and ol' Tay? Wasn't Ramona running right towards the camera man? Nah, I don't think paps upset Ramona.

Why isn't Jake smiling in any of these pictures? My question still stands.

Jake looks very dutiful in the pics. Although I wonder if Ramona was all that thrilled when Jake made her ride in the cab with her helmet on.

I thought it looked like his mom was with them too.

I wonder if he is worried his sister could be upset that Ramona got pap'd. If you notice they are no pictures of Ramona's face published, and you know that photographers got a few pics of her face.

But seeing so much of Jake from the back you can notice that he's definitely gotten his haircut, try to get it shaped while it grows back in. (You can see how much he had it cut up the back to give him a longer neck.)

prairiegirl said...

But why don't they mention that it's his mom? After all, his mom is famous, too. And they showed her during the Yom Kippur photos, credited her with her name and all. With the plethura of pictures, I would think they had at least one which showed Mrs. Gyllenhaal's face. Wouldn't you think?

My argument would be if Maggie didn't mind Ramona being papped for the infamous Thanksgiving ol' Tay photo op, then I don't know why she would be upset over this, which is clearly a photo op.

destiny said...

Yeah, don't think Maggie would care if it is an arranged photo opp, which I'm betting it is. And isn't it funny, coming right after people were talking about how he was out with Naomi last weekend without Ramona while Maggie and Peter were clearly away.

What "people" were talking about that?
