Direct Your Attention

One more time in the director's chair for Austin. After getting pics of him directing back in the fall, now we get to the see the product of all his hard work. This time he's got one of the biggest episodes of the season, with the return of Lucas to Tree Hill.

But it's not all about Lucas. Nathan might be stuck in a warehouse but that doesn't mean he got shelved.

Check out Austin, Chad, Joy and Shantel talk about the episode and Season 9. (Watch all the way to end - isn't that what Austin's doing now?)

Yesterday Austin tweeted how proud he is of the episode:

The episode I directed will be on tomorrow night. I would be honored if you tuned in. I'm very proud of it. - AUS10
As well as he should. Schwahny and Davola were impressed with what Austin did with his directorial debut and had nothing but good things to say as does his fellow castmates.

Check out what they say about Austin directing and Austin in action directing for season 8 starting at the 5:30 mark here and finishing up in the first fifty seconds of the follow up video.

Tonight on the Crazy Tree. Real Housewife of Tree Haley seeks help from Long Gone but not forgotten Lucas as Nathan makes an attempt to escape from the guys with ridiculous accents. BrookeDavis comes face-to-face with an X. (Wait is The Crazy Tree, or just another day on the set for Sophia?) JustJulian not just a director but a detective and uncovers evidence that helps BiggestBadDadEver Dan in his search for Nathan, while FeatsofClay makes a connection with another patient.
More to come from the big guy!

hoping for no more beards said...
I think that if Jake is rolling a new bearding (I hope not!), pay attention for different patterns this time. Although he has the same publicist, it'll be the first bearding under William Morris inc. They may have different strategies. Jake also has experience now with the past beardings and he'll have to correct many mistakes to make it believable. It's interesting they are in Paris, the only place where Lea is recognised by name so that the sightings mention her. If the purpose of this trip is to stage pics, wait for them to appear in a French magazine (probably Public, Voici or Closer, the three main French tabloids), I don’t think they will use US weekly as the first source this time. What makes me think this could be a new bearding arrangement is that it comes exactly days after Sophin ends. It follows the past pattern, when one beards the other doesn't. I hope I am totally wrong and Jake and Austin are indeed following a new path of being themselves and from now on every week will be like the Berlinale week full of Jaustin :)

I agree. There may very well be some telltale signs that Jake is going to beard again. Besides the points already made, there are some other salient indicators as well:

1) Even though Jake has not worked since last summer, he accepts an invitation to be a judge at the Berlinale. This is something he has never done before, instead of looking for work stateside.
2) By accepting the invitation, a high profile venue is created for Jake to meet Léa Seydoux. WME knows how everyone made fun of the stupid stories that circulated, then changed a thousand times in 2010, about how he met Swift. And, no one believes a hot, eligible, charming 31 year old man like Jake needs his sister to introduce him to women. So now we get the all grown up Jake finding his own woman "by chance" while he's just innocently fulfilling his duties as a judge at the Festival.
3) The Academy Awards is a major venue for networking. Yet, it looks like Jake will be absent for the first time in...forever.
4) Léa Seydoux does not leave Berlin after her film is premiered. She hangs around and attends parties and fashion shows.
5) Austin tweets yesterday about a speech given by Graham Taylor way back in June 2011. The guy brokers deals for indies globally. Graham is a bigwig at WME, Jake's new agency. The stats are given in the speech that in the last ten years, the Global dollars for Hollywood have shifted. Simply a decade ago the US box office represented 2/3 of the world’s gross. It is now less than a 1/3. The numbers have inversed themselves. In other words, the international market is more important than the domestic one.
6) What better way to repackage Jake that hooking up with an up and coming newcomer who is also European and French. Surely, people will think Jake is heterosexual now.
7)Léa Seydoux is not known as a beard but she is positioning herself for movie stardom. To be associated with Jake would provide her with more press and visibility
8) Jake gets more privacy to unfurl his new fauxmance away from the much more suspicious American paps.
9) Jake looked awfully sad that day he parted with Busy Philipps and her daughter. Like he knew something big was going to be changing in his life.
10) Austin has ended his bearding assignment.

WME knows his product value said...

Jake’s strong point is the international market. His movies always do better abroad and the foreign audience has a better esteem of him as a movie star. Using the European market for promotion (film festival, fauxmance publicity) is understanding his niche and using it to his advantage.

Methodical Muser said...

One more point about Jake possibly being position for another bearding assignment. After signing with WME in December, the very first project Jake is cast for is not a movie, but the Berlinale Film Festival as a judge. At first, I thought this was part of the reimaging of Jake, but it very well could also be to provide him with a venue for his next showmance. If indeed he did have another baby in November, this is the same timing for the last fake dating with Taylor Swift. Baby born in August 2010, by the end of October he is bearding again. This time the baby might have been born in November and now by February, Jake might be bearding again.

I hope it's not true, but it would fit with his previous practice and would indicate that WME is going to package Jake the same way as CAA, only maybe in a more subtle manner.

Methodical Muser said...

I agree WME. But, part of that niche may very well be selling him as Mr. Heterosexual. Wouldn't want some gay movie star bringing in the revenue now would we?

the bearding game said...

Is it possible too that WME is going to Europe to find his next beard because no beard in Hollywood will go near Jake? I mean Jake is one of the worst I've seen when it comes to the bearding game. Partly, I think because he is a dad and wants to be careful about the images he projects and also because he's in love with Austin. I also think alot of people have become more savvy as to who the beards are in Hollywood.

two faces said...

“Hopeful tb said....Lea, Gretchen, Chris. It's always someone else but Austin. I've been around since 2006 and like clockwork, whenever there is new news/pictures of Austin with Jake there is spin that Jake is dating someone else.”

I agree. The hypocrisy and denial is just incredible. All the Jake fansites were mute about Austin in Berlin and even identify the pics of Austin as Francois Ozon (to the point of forcing a blog owner who mentioned Austin by name to delete it from the main post), while they are all happy to mention Lea as many times as possible since that Hungarian article and they can now be relieved that she is the reason why Jake was so happy in Berlin and the reason why he is in Paris. Austin always has been the biggest threat, if he appears with Jake they are just terrify of him and have to find a reason quickly to ignore his existence and calm their nerves.

prairiegirl said...

And maybe an oncoming bearding gig could explain it sounding like Jake had digs in Dahlsten. Maybe he's going to be overseas a lot more to be closer to the beard.

Better to keep the kids out of the public/paps' eyes, too. To see Jake's reaction during that whole haircutgate and the bleeding of more pictures afterwards, I think Jake will do anything for his children, like any parent would do.

Unfortunately, M&M, you bring up way too many good points.

Methodical Muser said...

And, if that whole hairdresser tandrum "scene" was staged, it gives Jake cover for dropping out of the limelight and becoming even more private. You know, "Poor me, the paps just won't stop hounding me," excuse. The Dalston tweets were interesting, because they didn't even appear until February 20th and one of the tweeters was a foodie. Quite possible a friend/acquaintance of Jake's.

I agree. I can see the guys moving overseas.

crystal ball... said...

Most fauxmances in Hollywood (gay or straight) are done for publicity. Of course, bearding to stay closeted is a part of it for Jake, but aside from that, it's just part of the business. It's how you promote yourself, sadly. Lea will get a huge boost in name recognition and interest in the US if she has a few mumblings of a romance with Jake. Jake is prepping for End of Watch.

A big risk for Jake coming out with Austin is not just that he is gay, but that he couldn't help promote himself as a leading man through romantic fauxmances.

Just like Austin with Sophia. Yes, Austin was bearding, but he was also promoting his show. And it worked.

Some hetero couplings that are real are still promotion vehicles. Look at Angelina and Brad - they promote the sh*t out of themselves and their relationship and exploit their kids whenever they have something to promote. It's the same thing.

I know this isn't news to anyone. But it's a different way of looking at the fauxmances that happen. It's not JUST about bearding and staying in the closet. It's part of the job to promote projects, too.

I think what makes Jake & Austin different from other couples in HW who beard?

They're hiding a platform of kids.

I'm not sure how they think this makes them like everyone else in HW but then again, their brain capacity isn't impressing me too much right now.

I'm really enjoying the discussion and differences in opinions and theories concerning Jake, Austin, their careers, bearding and the family as well.

In particular I've come to respect how thorough M&M is in her background and beliefs, how Destiny backs up her own views with her take on years of observation, and now quite enjoy reading PR pov's musings and writing style.

I'm here in part for the entertainment, but mostly because I have always felt or experienced a great surge of love & realism in what I've seen from Jake and Austin together (it's palpable)and in the friendships developed here over the past years.

For all those regular posters, past and present, from PG and Tom, M, Jason, Stubborn, and so many, many more, I've come to expect good entertainment and great discussion. My views may not be as fixed or confirmed as others but I really do appreciate having my beliefs flexed and stretched as we watch, comment and argue.

What this amounts to... is an overdue Valentine to my online friends here, and another very honest Thank You to Special for creating a great place to come together and for providing such great content in her posts and sticking with it.

Sincerely...

You mean six made up years of holding hands was too slow for her? She's sooooo demanding! LOL.

I love how they say they've been dating since the break up with CMM. Guess they forgot all about that quote she gave back in 2006. What happened to Jon Foster and her other true loves, Obama and that personal trainer of hers?

prairiegirl said...

Not progressing. lol.

After six years, Soapy? Because Austin wasn't progressing with a ring? Because that's about the only next step you had.

lol. Too funny.

You know what? They ought to call Sophin's bearding the Pillow Top edition.

Talk about excess padding.

What About the Children? said...

I think what makes Jake & Austin different from other couples in HW who beard? They're hiding a platform of kids.

IA, Prairie Girl. That's a huge difference. Raising a secret, closeted young family, while getting pictures of you hugging up someone other than your real mate is incredibly confusing for children. Never mind lying in the press and saying you don't have kids. That's the same as saying your are not proud of what you have done. You are denying that you've had children because you're more concerned about a paycheck or a more lucrative career. Parenting should always come first. If the two of them need to change careers they should have done that. I love the guys to death, but the situation for these two is different than with other publicity whoring couples.

The 2011 Nebula Awards Nominees have been announced and Source Code has been nominated for the Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation

Oh, and look what other film has been nominated. Woody Allen's, Midnight in Paris with Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates and...oh yeah, Léa Seydoux. Surely, just a coincidence.

prairiegirl said...

What, the Nubile Awards? Is that what you said, M&M????

destiny said...

Source Code did well for a small movie, but it's not enough to put Jake back on the map, so to speak.

I sure hope he's not bearding, but PR POV sure made some good points.

Yes, I know pushing couples is the way a lot of people get publicity, but there are plenty who don't do it and have very good careers.

The meltdown at WFT2 is unbelievable. Almost 200 posts in the past 24 hours, all attacking OMG, and many coming in bursts of posts within a minute or two of each other. Nobody could have a conversation like that, it would seem to be the work on one person who probably typed up a bunch of nonsense and then just started cutting and pasting.

Someone is really rattled and worried.

Methodical Muser said...

Don't know what WFT2 folks would be worried about. Jake and Austin are going to do what they want regardless how enlightened or foolish their choices turn out to be. Maybe they're going crazy because it's so obvious Jake and Austin are still together.

I am definitely going to be dissappointed if Jake goes into a full bearding contract. He looked miserable with reese. I can't believe he would put himself through that again. I think I am not gonna let a few tweets change what I have been enjoying the last few months. When I see actual pics with Jake and this girl together especially on some mag rag then I will believe that both he and Austin have toatlly lost their minds.

An occasional lunch date and a few tweets won't kill me as long as I continue to see him and Austin together. For some reason they together they have always made me smile.

I really want to say thanks to Seaweed for love.

When OMG started it was just a little place for people to come and talk about our favorite pair and their incredible story. Who knew it would have grown to what it is. Just a little corner of the web just about them together.

It's been so great to see old friends and new ones dropping in and all the great discussions that have been happening lately. It's also brought some new records for visits to OMG. Since Jake and Austin were seen at sushi in January OMG has been breaking it's own records. And last week with the guys at The Berlinale it was our biggest week yet!

Seeing Jake and Austin together is inspiring!

Thanks for posting that article on Austin directing M&M.

Some great quotes from it. And it looks like Austin got his eye on directing more.

This episode was his second shot at directing on the show. "This year I definitely felt more confident," he says. "Every director does things differently and I kind of eased into how I like to do things. I like to move quickly, I like to keep the actors on a rhythm, and I like to keep rolling as much as possible. I'd love to be rolling constantly. I hate cutting and letting everything break down and letting everybody do [other] stuff. If I could, I'd just keep rolling and keep doing the scenes over and over. I think it keeps actors closer to everything and I think they like that and appreciate that. Directing's been one of the coolest things I've ever done in my life. I'm really excited and lucky."

"He did such a great job with this episode," [Chad Michael]Murray says of Nichols. "He fits in that chair so well, he really does."

We checked in with Nichols again this week, now that the episode is locked and ready to air tonight, and he tells us that he's very happy with how everything worked out. "I'm now starting to pursue directing more, which I'm very excited about," he tells us. "I just brought a directing agent a copy of my episode to see. I just watched it and I'm really happy with it. I think it's a really strong episode. I had a really good script, written by Mark Schwahn. It was my second time directing, so I felt stronger and more confident."

As the "One Tree Hill" cast prepares to make their next career moves, directing is at the top of Nichols' wish list. "I've got my eye on a book that I want to buy," he says. "I want to make a feature. I've been a true lover of movies my whole life. There's something about sitting in a theater with a bunch of strangers, when it's dark, and having this shared experience. I've always wanted to make movies."

I am not sure why all the complaining about WFT2 if you dislike that site why do you go there or even post there and then come back here and complain about what they say? Clearly, they have different opinions so I would say you should pretty much expect to be ripped and called out.
Is it possible Jake just had lunch with this chick, and tabloids just post the usual crap about it? I mean can he have lunch with a female without that being a sure sign she is the next beard? But to me it seems like if she is going to be, she'd be the perfect choice, far and away pretend a long distance relationship, a few sightings, then brake up because the distance is a problem. I would take that over having to go out regularly with the Whiterspoon!

First of all, I'm not seeing "all kinds of complaining". Please reference all of the comments you are referring to today where we are complaining about WFT2.

Second of all, why would a site be obsessed with "ripping" and "calling out" another blog? When is endless name calling and slander of other posters ever acceptable or to be expected?

I'm sorry but the rest of your comment was lost on me after these two opinions.

Really enjoyed the article on Austin and his directing abilities M&M, he certainly is well thought of among those he works with and appears to be on track for an interesting future. Thanks for sharing.

On another note, took a look around WFT2 earlier today, the first time in a very long time. Although it put me in mind of a cesspool, there must be some who think it has some value.

What occurs to me is that the creation of OMG was inspired and holds good vlaue. The reqirement for posters to choose a name and the shaping of a community as a result has true value and should be celebrated.

I have to say now though that this thought has dawned on me.

While Austin could very well be over in Paris with Jake, it really doesn't matter at this point. I know the kids are over there. Austin, who knows for sure.

But I'll tell you something. I had originally thought that Jake & the fam were in Paris for some extended family time together and perhaps to get away from the U.S. paps.

But now I realize this. Had this trip been solely intended to be private family time after his duties at Berlinale, we would not be seeing Jake sitting alone at a table with his phone.

In fact, if it were really private family vacay time, we would not have seen Jake AT ALL.

prairiegirl said...

The picture of Jake and His Phone in Paris could just as easily have been taken in NYC. Of course it wasn't, I'm not saying it was NYC.

But I'm saying that there's no difference between what Jake is doing in Paris and what he does in New York City. None. So you have to ask yourself why is he there? If he wanted to sit at a table with his phone, he could do that in NYC at Colombo and have the comfort of his brick wall behind his back to boot.

we were curious as to whether it was easier for Nichols to say goodbye to Tree Hill given that he was one of the later additions to the cast.

"That's what I thought!" he laughs. "I thought it was going to be easier for me than maybe for Sophia or Joy. Turns out I was just as big of a baby as everybody else."

It was the final day that really did a number on him. "The whole last week was hard, but it was really fun, you know? You're with all your friends, everybody's feeling good. Then the last day, I walked on set and I sat down in the hair and makeup trailer. Tim does my makeup, but sometimes if things are busy, his assistant does it. So I looked at Tim, and he said 'Let me do you for the last time' -- which sounds weirdly sexual -- but he said, 'Sit in my chair, it's the last day,' and I just fell apart, man. It was so sad and so beautiful."

Nichols, who came on board as a guest star -- and a villain, in some ways -- has no regrets about sticking it out for the long haul on the Little Show that Could. "We watched people get married over these years. We've seen people have babies. I've made friends that will always, always be my friends," he says. "I hope someday I'll bring a movie back to Wilmington, and I know that those guys will crew it up for me. I've never been a part of something for so long, and I've never gotten so close to people. It was an extremely special experience for me."
